    Ipod classic error

first off...i KNOW. ipod's are so OOD, so obsolete, etc.

that having been said, i keep things until they no longer work. my 2004 toyota matrix has a hard wired in port for my Ipod to plug into, which allows me access to my music library through my deck (again, i know, obsolete) at all times. i have a portable speaker with an Ipod dock at work that i can bring that same Ipod into my office and continue listening to my music at the office. and the Ipod classic, with it's 160 GB of space, allows me to keep my ENTIRE music library (at last check, approx, 14,000 songs) on it, and i can set it to random and never hear the same song twice in more than a week. granted, i haven't added music to it in a few years, so it's older stuff, but that's not bad. i don't mind so much given the variety.

so here's my problem. a few months ago, i got an error message on the Ipod that states i need to connect it to itunes to reset it - since then it's been a brick. i haven't had a computer with itunes on it for several years, and now that itunes is gone, i'm wondering if i'm SOL.

do you think if i took it and my music library to an apple store they'd be able to fix it for me? my music library is stored on an external hard drive, so taking it in with me is NBD. i got rid of a lot of my CD's about 3 years ago, because i had everything backed up on the hard drive, so it would be a major bummer if i cannot get the Ipod back to workable status.

    thanks.

unfortunately no, it only works with the older serial port style connector. i'm pretty sure the new Ipods have a new connection port.

You can still get itunes. do a search for itunes old version, download it and plug in the classic. You may want to update it with an ssd. the adapters are around $40.

You might want to check if this adapter will let the head unit control a newer model:

I’m in the same boat. Why pay to stream inferior quality versions of songs I already own when I can just have a good chunk of my library with me at all times. I swapped out the battery in my old ipod and put in a 128GB SSD. Still works great.

For your issue, have you tried other software? I’ve never used iTunes even when this device was brand new. I use a program called SharePod. Its just one exe you leave on the ipod and run it from any computer. Loading it up is just drag and drop. The management is extremely simple. Look it up. It might rewrite your database for you.

I use an old version from back when it was free. If you can’t find it let me know and I’ll drop it on a cloud share somewhere for you.

A 64GB Android phone can run you like $150, even less if bad IMEI/ESN, and since you are just playing music Android supports MP3 natively, no conversion and a bad ENS/IMEI won't matter...
Most modern Androids can accept "up to" a 2TB MicroSD card (so use whatever you can afford, or is avail, as 2TB aren't avail yet, and 1TB cards are like $250+).
Industry standard USB-C, so you can even charge your phone on a notebook USB-C charger, which is VERY convenient.

A better option might just be to use your phone to play music, with modern-tech, like Noise Canceling Bluetooth headphones, and just buy a High-CAP USB battery bank or $10-$30 and stop milking the Apple bovine?

Or just load up an old ipod classic for $50-$100... Integrates fine with car systems, controls all work, etc. Boom done. No dicking around with a phone.

i have been using my phone in the meantime, and fortunately i have unlimited data on my plan, but as mentioned, a lot of the music i have on the ipod / external hard drive are no longer available to me via other means, and i don't want to have to buy them again. not to mention, if there's no need to buy additional hardware, i'll go that route - i'm sometimes a cheap bastard, especially when money is tight, which it is until taxes and bonus comes in.

Look for different cable configurations on ebay. I was able to find one to hook my old Ipod to a new Pioneer DVD player one and can now watch movies from the Ipod on the screen - even when driving since I found the parts to bypass the ebrake interlock on ebay too.

Dinking around with dead tech... for $50 more upgrade to current tech, instead of beating that dead horse. Bluetooth in my cars for like 9 years+ now... (even if aftermarket stereos)

REAL cheap bastards use MP3's that never need to be converted to proprietary media, and can be copied to any media, on the fly, as a drive, including MicroSDs... no iTunes, no cloud, just move the card to a new device, if desired. Problem is iPod... milking dead cows, and beating dead horses...

Thanks-I had no idea about this. When my 160 dies I'll either buy another one or move to 256. I've got a decent system in the car and would never downrez to crappy Bluetooth unless I suddenly wanted to listen to podcasts instead of uncompressed music.
