USB mouse... Laser?

Since I am on-call 50% of the year, I just upgraded KVMs to the USB-type, and since my new monitor is running w/HDMI now, I had to get an HDMI switch, as the work notebook cannot be RDP'd to w/out screwing with GP, it seems, but that is all logged. Since I was on it, I upgraded to a buckling-spring USB keyboard too, but on to the mouse...

Not that I am a super-hardcore-1337-gamer, or anything, but FPS gaming more than I ever thought I would since I gave up the OG EQ to learn Linux and get M$ cert. but looking at wired USB rats, coming from PS/2-connectors, and started with a Logitech C7 in the late 80's.


I am into basic small oval designs, and the ergonomic designs bug the crap out of my hand/wrist, as I claw-grip, and have since the 80's, so there is no hope for ergonomics for me...

Adjustable, on the fly sensitivity?

All hype, or worth it?

I might get the fancy sub-$10 Logitech M100 again, AND a M90 to compare as my last M100 I wore the left-click out, and have been using a Wyse thin-client rat for a few years now, but it might be USB time?

Does a USB KVM make a hi-res mouse useless? (Always been a PS/2 guy, as I dealt with the 1st gens of USB mice & k/boards, if you know the struggle...)

What say you?

I'm no hardcore gamer or have any special ergo needs, but I've run USB (including wireless) mice through KVM's and didn't notice any degradation in performance.

I've used KVMs which add lag to the input. Like... a quarter second lag. Unusable lag. Beware.

Some people get very specific about how the feel of their mouse should be, hence adjustable weight. It's like the different wraps on the handle of a tennis racket. If you're not a pro, you're probably not going to know or care. But there's a market.

On the fly sensitivity is nice sometimes. It's really not a negative and can be ignored.

One thing I've come to appreciate is programmable buttons. Specifically shift buttons. I know you said no ergos, I'm just linking this as example:

The button on the left (T3) is the shift button. Holding it down with the thumb changes all of the buttons on the mouse to their shift function. The most useful one is shift+scroll wheel which changes audio volume up or down. If you have the budget, those extras can be very nice.

But over-all: mice have come so far that it's hard to get a "bad" one. If it's comfortable in your hand (and more than say $15 to exclude the cheap chicom crap), it's probably GTG.

Microsoft brought back the Intellimouse last year - thank the heavens! I just got Intellimouse Pro, could not be happier since my last one was on last legs after 20yrs. So many mice these days are puny laptop sized or 3/4 scale. But the Intellimouse is man sized.

I prefer optical mice over the laser ones. Currently using a Chinese brand that is decent at $14.99 though the braided cable is a bit heavy to drag around.

I still have a PS/2 connector KVM... I run a compact Keyb/touchpad 1U drawer to control the rack... have a backup new in box, and all the USB cables... but the old one still works with adapters.

At home I am using a Logitech MX Master - that's a full-sized mouse, and I like the wheel functions. It has speed scroll, dual-mode, side wheel, etc... functions work and the extra buttons don't get in the way.

I prefer wired mice at home. I'm running this HUMONGOUS Lian Li case, and I can't get laser mice or keyboards to align right with the receiver... so I run hardwired at home.

I guess I never got that into a game where I though the wireless mouse was limiting frags. I just finished another older one... Hard Reset Redux. Found that one researching the Shadow Warrior 3 release date. Seemed like I was shooting everything I wanted to shoot on that MX Master, which is wireless. I do use Keys for a lot of controls... and for whatever reason the Keyb is wired, hahah. A lot of mice including this MX Master have a extended receiver that sits on the desk right in front of the mouse... YMMV.

Went with a few budget rats... AND found the pad-style I like, as they came up in ...customers also bought...

I got a couple spares... as I have 2 kids too.
I have never used a "fancy" mouse with a back and FW button, so I'll give this a go, and it goes to 8000 DPI even if I will never go that high, unless I crank the acceleration down to /dev/null?
One review had a link selling the same mouse on Amazon for $27, so I will always shop around instead of going with direct affiliate links... (60% markup...)

I'm like the old guy with the 426 Hemi 4-speed Plymouth Superbird... who never goes over 35mph in it. I build gaming-quality desktops for my personal use, & while I may not NEED the power... I wanna make sure I HAVE the POWER... JUST in case....

I chose the slow boat, as I do not subscribe to Amazon prime, except for trial membership during Christmas season for faster shipping, as nothing streaming on Prime apparels to me... just like HBO, since Game of Thrones is done.

Apparently all my crap is arriving today... but WAS slated for next week, or further out arrival time.

Weird thing... my USB KVM only connects via a 15-pin VGA connector, with USB on the other end...



I have never seen this implemented before.

I assume they are using a few of the ground pins for USB ("not used" & "No pin" are actually used)?

The KVM I am using has PS/2 x 2 for each source + VGA for video only on the back of the unit and this is really annoying when they work loose because the cables are pretty heavy. Those screw-down type would be better. It is a Trendnet TK-801R FWIW. Other one is a Tripp Lite and has those VGA-like connectors on the KVM.
