+1 for Kindle Paperwhite. I've been reading so many more books because I haven't had to lug them around. Most library systems also let you check out e-books for free, so it's incredibly convenient and easy to read for free.

I love my Kindle paperwhite. Very easy on the eyes (far better then any backlit reader)

If he is in the Apple ecosystem(iPhone, iPad, Laptop etc.) the Books app is great and sinks(Library, boomarks, Highlights etc.) with all the apple devices.

                  Best of luck.

Yeah, calling it a e-reader shows you are old. Welcome to the club.
Also, most people born after 1990 before the Kindle Fire line vs the Paper whites.
But as Mr.Green mentioned, if the kid is in the Apple ecosystem, get him an iPad.
But I do recall some stats for text books that Kindle was ahead, especially with the Prime library. You may want to research that first.

Depends on how expensive is your son's college.
                        Expensive college: Apple iPad.
Inexpensive college: Amazon Kindle Fire or Samsung tablet.
                        Cheap local college: Amazon Paperwhite.

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite to take with me backpacking. Works great for reading, but understand, that that is really all it does. Took me a bit to get used to the idea that I was holding an electronic book(s)... and nothing else. I didn't want anything else, just saying it's a very basic device.

An iPad does books as well as everything else a college kid might want to do... at a premium price, of course.
