On my HP Color LaserJet 4500N, the middle drawer plastic cover broke. Looks like the transfer belt unit has some broken plastic tabs. Cannot find parts for this thing. So, any suggestions on a replacement HP unit? Would like to upgrade so I can do 11" x 17". Color. Double sided. Dual paper tray.

HP Color LaserJet Suggestions to Replace 4500

Yeah, I checked on ebay. Nothing. The 4500N doesn't print 11x17 and I thought I would use this as an opportunity to upgrade. Yes, we use our printer. We prefer paper books to e-stuff, as well. I am not going to ask about checks.Comment

What's your budget? Does it have to be an HP printer?

You might look at the new generation of wide format inkjet printers with high capacity, refillable ink tanks. That was the big hit against color inkjets in the past so maybe with that out of the equation, you don't need to stay with a laser. Get a cheap, disposable b/w laser for the stupid stuff and a wide format for more premium color work. I'd go with roll paper on an inkjet too.NRA Certified Instructor: Basic Pistol ShootingComment

Unless UV-cured, inkjet prints fail to be water or abrasion resistant, and the layered product is pretty fragile and not colorfast. Some inkjets do a version of heat-sublimation, but it doesn’t compare to the acetate film versions. Banding can be an issue and the inks are expensive and dry out.
Lasers still need to print in halftone, but are fused and do not suffer these problems, plus the consumables are dirt cheap compared to ink. Plus, they are faster and higher volume, plus usually built to have higher page counts without repair. Lots of pluses.
If you want the best of both worlds, for continuous tone, go dye-sub, preferably acetate film. If you need B&W volume, and duplexing, color laser still has its place.Comment
