    Laptop disc drive

So I got a new laptop, and like most of them, it has no optical drive. I need one to load music cd’s and gunsmith videos on it. My bro says just get a BlueRay player and you can use it to watch movies on TV(unlikely), and still load cd’s on the laptop. I would be more inclined to get a pretty basic unit, or would it be worth it to get the BlueRay player? Or suggestions for either?

See if you can find someone with a desktop/laptop that has a CD-ROM/DVD drive and don't mind loading those music/videos onto a USB flash drive for you. It is not worth it to buy a optical drive for a laptop these days.

This would be an awesome use for all those extra megapixels of camera resolution in your phone that keep doubling every year.

Snap a photo of the bottom of a CD and the CPU/GPU renders the data from the image.

        We’re not there, yet.

I got an external Blue Ray player for my laptop that has USB connectivity to the laptop or my home PC. It can work as another redundant piece of equipment to use for both units to do what you want do, and what your brother suggested. They're not very expensive now.

Yup, USB optical drives are cheap. Just have one on hand for the rare occasion that you need to transition away from CDs and DVDs. I think I paid about $25 for a USB CD/DVD RW Blue Ray player. I don't use the drive as a player, but rip the content of the disk before using the disk for skeet.

USB optical drives are not obsolete.... Walk into any Walmart and Best Buy and you still see plenty of movies for sale on the cheap.... RedBox still exists...
Sure, most watch these only on their TV BlueRay player...

If you don't watch movies on the laptop then just get a standard CD player for data transfer. Cheap enough to have one in case you need one in a pinch.

last i looked (and it's been awhile), basic cd/dvd rw drives were like $20; bluray, probably not much more.

definitely cheap enough to be worth having one around.

When I bought my last laptop I made sure it had an optical drive built in. I do too much ripping of media to not have one. However it was a DVD/CD drive, and I wanted to use the slim Blu ray writer I already had, so I bought one of these:

Pawtec Slim Aluminum USB 3.0 External Enclosure For Optical SATA Drive Blu-Ray DVD MAC / PC (Red) https://www.newegg.com/product/9SIA37517P0603?m_ver=1

What's nice about it is it's USB 3 powered so you don't need to plug it in to a wall outlet, just plug it in to a USB 3 port on your laptop and you're ready to go. But it also does include an A/C port in case you need to connect it to a USB 2 port which isn't self powered. It's a high quality item. Highly recommended. Or you can just buy an all in one external USB 3 Blu ray drive.

I think it is worth getting a blue ray player even in this day and age as I downloading the digital copy is more time taking so rather get a physical copy.
