Daughter getting an 8-core Ryzen 7 build for Christmas...

    1) AMD RYZEN 7 2700 8-Core 3.2 GHz (4.1 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W YD2700BBAFBOX Desktop Processor
    2) 32GB of DDR4 3200 RAM (actually going in my rig, she is getting the 8GB of 2666 in mine now, and the board only supports 2666, but whatevz...)
    3) MSI Motherboard A320M PRO-M2 (one of the few fan-less chipsets)
    4) 970 Pro M.2, 512GB
    5) Thermaltake TR-500

About $600 (Well, like $659 w/tax and shipping) w/all the fixings, and some dongles that gave me the $3.99 shipping total.
Couldn't get it back to $0, after I changed some cables...

We will see what it performs like compared to an i7 8-core.

I DID afterthought get an 802.11AC Realtek WiFi adapter for like $9+tax on-top, shipped from Cali.

She had a T400 that is really on it's last leg, AND she closed something in the screen, so it is running with an external widescreen monitor, AND it is about time she gets a real PC for homework. A couple PCI-Express x16 video cards laying around the house, and I am sure they will do homework fine, and some Fallout 3/New Vegas/4(NV & 4 might be a bit much for a 12 year old), TF2, Portal, & Portal2 for thought provoking exercises, and Goat Simulator for dumb-kids fun...

Seems pretty sufficient for a homework pc. Should do the job until high school, then you'll need to get a laptop for her.

might I suggest to in looking at getting a used video card with nvidia releaseing the rtx series last year I think It came out. I see a lot of people off loading their old Gtx series cards for some good deals.

Even the lower end 6gb 1060 gpu is a great card that can still carry its weight and then some

i've been intrigued and am salavating building my own. haven't in a veyr long time.

i was thinking ryzen too as my first amd chip i ever put together. but hot dang, all of today's builds have crazy fans. how can you even access the memory modules on some mobos after you put on the cpu fan like a noctua. now i can see more of the value of water cooling just for mobo access if you need it.

          OP.. no rgb stuff?

W/the stock Ryzen fan it had a red LED that fades, if I recall correctly, or was it solid red?

            I have never been a (RGB/transparent case-side) cosmetics "guy", hell my i7 is in a 19" rack...

RGB/LED nonsense CAN be an issue:

I didn't realize it when I bought it, but the AMD RYZEN 7 2700 8-Core 3.2 GHz (4.1 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W YD2700BBAFBOX is a Hyperthreader (well 16-thread, 8-core anyways, of the AMD variety).

              LOL... that was funny.

wasn't completely serious OP.. i wonder why the big hoopla on rgb too. but i'd probably get a clear case just to see.

i saw dimms that had lighting too when i was looking at some youtube videos. i'm like...wth? what for? wasted electricity that can go somewhere else.

What else are people going waste that 1KW power supply on...?

My 500w supply (daughter's 550w) is fine for what I've got, Running an R9 200 series (2GB), as I am not buying a RTX 2080 that runs at @ 250W for $1,480.00 OOTB.
I only play a few games on the confuser, and mostly they are older titles...

When it's time to replace my current desktop (i7 4790k) in planning to build around the Ryzen 3950X. I've used purely Intel processors since the C2D chips were released, but that top end Ryzen is a beast.

At the moment I'm collecting parts for my retro builds. Finding some good stuff lately.

I recently put together a system based on Ryzen 3900X, last AMD CPU was a K6, and I believe you will be happy with the 3950X unless you want access to all PCIe lanes and quad-channel RAM then you should look at ThreadRipper. Compiling Sage Math from source as a benchmark my 5820K finished just under 3 hours the 3900X a bit over 16 minutes.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it will serve me well. I do a lot of video and music ripping and encoding (from my own media) which can really utilize many threads to the fullest. Currently it takes my 4790k about 10-11 hours to encode a full length Blu ray movie using 8 threads with my settings in Handbrake, and I bet the 3950X can do it in about an hour or less, based on the comparative benchmarks I've seen, so it would save me a boatload of time. It is phenomenally efficient at media encoding with all those threads.
