Windows 10 "S" mode. What is it?

I need a cheap windows laptop that will run 10 year old windows XP era programs. The cheap windows laptops have Windows S mode software. It says you can only use apps from the Windows store with the S mode, but it can be changed. Will these laptops run old Windows XP era software?

S mode is for non commercial use sold on some hardware platforms. You cannot connect to a domain and several other limitations. I recall one of those limitations is you can only use Office via the Windows App Store. Also cannot install some types of software. Thus the lower cost. Since I do not deal in consumer channels, this may have changed.
