    Win 10 question...

Purchased a new desktop PC that came with Norton's installed. I don't want to uninstall Norton's but I don't like that it boots up as part of Win 10 (I prefer Malwarebytes). I went into MSConfig to disable "Norton WSC Service" and "Norton Security". But when I re-boot, they come back into Win 10.

Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

Hard to just disable anti virus that way, because they have defenses to prevent them from being disabled, which is the very first thing a virus would love to do.

Win10's antivirus is very good, Norton is now unnecessary. Go ahead & uninstall Norton, the PC will boot faster & have fewer resources consumed.

100% agree; Windows Defender is great.

OP: Are you unable to uninstall Norton via Add or Remove Programs?

Well the problem is antivirus is designed to run all the time, else it's unable to protect your system in real time, which is what they do. So by disabling the service, you may as well not have it installed at all. If you don't want it running for whatever reason, just uninstall it and be done.

It's likely the real time scanning service and on demand scan routine utilize the same engine, so you can't have it both ways. I don't know how beefy your system is, but these days CPU and RAM resources are so plentiful, a real time scanning engine shouldn't have much of an impact on system performance.

The MS antivirus service/app runs all the time since it's part of the OS, so Norton's not necessary.

You might have to boot into safe mode before you can uninstall Norton.

Thanks all but still can't disable Norton's. I was told there is an application written by Nortons that will uninstall its software (and not to use Win 10's uninstall feature for it will tamper with basic Win 10 operation).

Anyone have any information on this? Can't find such documentation on the interwebs.

A quick search for Norton Uninstaller brought me to this link:

You can use IOBit Uninstaller, or "Your Uninstaller". Both work fine for dumping Norton.
