Bit the bullet on a new rig...

Since I have an old 1000VA UPS, I'm "downgrading" to a "power-saving" 850VA since I only run an old thin client as my Linux box now(, no Windows Server at home anymore), and my main (which will be the following).

    1) i7-9700k (8-core) - BX80684I79700K (couldn't find Retail 9700k on their site)
    2) MSI PRO B360M PRO-VDH LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel B360 SATA 6Gb/s Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
    3) Thermaltake silent up to 150Watt cooler CL-P039-AL12BL-A (no OC, so this should be $25 of overkill?)
    4) SAMSUNG 970 PRO M.2 2280 512GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe 1.3 64L V-NAND 2-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V7P512BW
    5) CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Desktop Memory Model CMK16GX4M2A2666C16
(Will double, if 32GB needed for VMs)
    6) New 19" deep 4U rackmount case (I don't use towers anymore, and this will be the perfect height on the rack to get to the guts, even after mounted, and I can get rid of an old dead 3u unit too!)
    7) Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound AS5-3.5G
    8) Win 10 Pro x64 Key purchased (grey-market)

I only play TF2 on the PC so the AMD Radeon R9 200, pulled from my current rig is fine.

Ran me a smidge over $1000 (including UPS) w/tax, w/out GPU, but hopefully this last a good-long-time, like the dead-rig did (>10 years).

The Samsung m.2 should let me milk it, as I only have a Sandisk 256GB as my primary Win drive right now, running into 4 years I think now at about 50% capacity.

I think I am going to pull parts out of the dead rig, and use them for a Frankenstein tower for my daughter to do homework on, and maybe a steam game, or two... instead of her laptop, which I can't see the screen of from a distance.

If she last 10-12 years also, then that isn't bad for about $80-100/year.

      What the hell Newegg?

Shipped/is sucking up 5 different shipping costs, and instead of dropping USPS for like $2.60 for the m.2 SSD, they shipped it UPS? THAT is craziness.

Looks like the last of the parts (non-case) will be here Friday...
then I have to wait for the case too!??!? It appears the case is shipping from a 3rd party, but really?

I think Newegg has their heads up their... horses.

Newegg is not cheap any more. Try bhphotovideo.com or Microcenter if there's one near you. Even Amazon if you're desperate.

          Not that bad...
The $129.xy 850VA UPS, and $64.42 tax is what put me about $50 over 1k mark.

The biggest suck-factor is the lack of HT in these new i7's, but no zombieload spectre-like issues.

Forgot to check for PS/2 connectors when I ordered, but luckily... STILL sporting 2x PS/2 connectors!

OMG, this 9th Gen i7 combo... WELL WORTH THE ~$900, even w/out HT!!!

Even in Win10 Pro, it does my bidding IMMEDIATELY!

Start menu-right up. Right-Click=NOW-Menus. Rt-Click the USB Safely... icon, RESPONDS... NOW.

The Win10 Pro install was like <15 minutes!!!

            It's almost like Win10 was Win7 again!!!

EDIT: I haven't even run the Debloat script yet!!!
Edit: Edit: Debloat script took like 20 seconds!

Nice setup. I'm close to 10 years on my current computer. I'm due for a new one. It's not upgrading any more.

HyperThreadding. So an 8-core would have 16 threads, that would show in Windows as 16 procs, which isn't really, but they were the bees-knees back in the day "Hyper-Threading improves performance for certain workloads by 30 percent to 40 percent.”

With psectre, and it's kin (ZombieLoad, etc) Intel decided to drop procs. with HT, in 9th-Gen i7's.

This thing is fast-enough for me!

I don't remember the i7 16-thread proc. generation I had at work, but it is NOTHING like this on Win10 Pro, even with 24GB of RAM (not that I needed or even used that at work, but when their rigs died, the RAM was left-over).

Just FYI, that's not the reason Intel didn't manufacture the 9th gen i7 CPUs with hyperthreading. That decision was purely due to economics and market segmentation, and the ability of Intel to make more $ from their customers. The fact that Spectre et al exploits hyperthreading is just an inconvenient coincidence.

In previous generations when all i7 CPUs had hyperthreading, there wasn't much incentive for consumers to buy the fastest, most expensive i7 when they could buy a midrange or low end CPU and overclock it and get roughly equal (or "close enough") performance as the high end version. This meant Intel sold far more midrange and low end CPUs than the high end models, as only the most hardcore enthusiasts ponied up for the most expensive CPUs.

Now since only the i9 9900 series offers hyperthreading, Intel be like "Oh you want 8+ cores AND hyperthreading? Pay me."
