i7 cooling...

It appears the i7's I have been looking at on Newegg don't come with CPU coolers, so if I am to buy one, and I don't think I'd go with an Intel-stock.

My Phenom x6 has this, w/heat-pipes low and integral from the base and also integral with the whole assembly:


1) Heat pipes a gimmick (that is stock, so I assume not), or what do you use to cool an i7, or equiv, no OC'ing planned)?

2) I still have some Arctic Silver Ceramique (OG, been in the fridge for 10+ years) with an OEM cooler, or aftermarket cooler even, is it worth using?

Stock Intel coolers work just fine. I used to work for an OEM computer company, and personally built thousands of machines. I can count on one hand how many CPUs have been DOA or came back from the field. They'll throttle like crazy if the heatsink gets clogged, but you can see if that's happening readily.

If you get unlocked CPUs they don't come with coolers, because they're intended for enthusiasts who will be overclocking. Alternatively, what you found is a non-retail, or grey market (not intended for sale in US).

If you're not overclocking, don't bother with an unlocked CPU.

Personally, I like the pre-assembled water coolers that have integrated water block and radiator. No leak down testing needed. I don't overclock either, but they allow you to run cool with almost no air movement, and don't exhaust CPU internal to the chassis.

The stock cooler from Intel is very good actually, I've had mine for over 10 years on my i7 930, a very old machine now but the stock cooler is still working fine.

I got a very wide but low-noise cooler master. It's super quiet and have never had an issue with it.

Stock coolers get loud when the cpu is under load. Cooler Master or Artic Freezer are great alternatives. Make sure you have enough space in your case.

+1 this; the heatpipe/tower-style coolers are going to be your best bang-for-buck for effectively cooling a powerful processor. The Coolermaster Hyper 212 is another really good one that will range around $35 and handle pretty serious cooling.

Also OP, you don't say what kind of i7 you're buying. The current i7 lineup ranges from as low as 35W TDP to as high as 95W TDP (and maybe even more than that; I don't proclaim to know it all). A higher TDP will necessitate more cooling in order to maintain comfortable temperatures. Of course you *could* just buy a cheaper cooler and let the CPU throttle itself when it gets too hot, but if you do that then why are you even spending the money on an i7? All of this to say: Don't cheap out on cooling. At least buy a decent heatpiped cooler with a big 92mm or 120mm fan.

If you're not overclocking, stock cooler is fine. If you really want to go after market and get something quieter and still good at cooling look at some Noctua fans.

depending on case limitations would dictate your cooler size requirements. but i like using the hyper 212 evo series with my intels. runs quiet and cools sufficiently especially if your not oc'ing.

Had a water cooling rig in my home setup until the motor went out. Had the extra parts for another build so i slapped on my 212 evo never went back.

When i did have the watercooling setup it was really quiet and looked trick. But no issues with the 212 evo and noise.

I just recently built my PC. It has an I7-8700k in it and I have a dual sided fac cooler (I can have two fans on each side) it's a medium sized cooler compared to my case. But I definitely recommend it. It's extremely quite and uses a low amount of power. It supports LGA 2066/1151 and AMD AM4 sockets. Inexpensive and a little over fair for the price.
