Nas solution!!! OMV or Freenas or????

I haven't updated my freenas box for years. Also I have an old ubuntu server that was strictly a file storage device. I am curious what most people are running today? I have the hardware to run the latest Freenas, but didn't know if there was another solution that is better in 2019 for file storage ONLY. I have heard about Open Media Vault, but didn't know if it has really proven itself. And of course XPenology. I don't need a video server, web server etc... Just a decent size file server. I will most likely use around 16TB.

I think FreeNAS is still the gold standard as far as Linux based file servers with a web interface go. If all you need is a file server, why even run a web interface? Unless you really need or like the utilities it provides. You could just install the latest version of Debian or CentOS and set up NFS and/or SMB shares. I do 99% of my Linux administration via SSH. A minimal install of CentOS is very light. Just a thought.

Just buy a Synology. I ditched my old unraid box and haven't looked back.

It looks like Freenas wins again for what I need it for.

Like they say, if it ain't broke...

FreeNAS will just keep getting better. I'm about to spin up a 16-bay Supermicro storage server myself at home, will probably try it out. I'll probably just end up mounting shares in a lightweight distro.
