Why anyone would trust a third party VPN service is beyond me. It's a natural MITM nexus, often run by state actors to unmask and log stupid people.

Learn to run your own on your own server rental or equipment at a minimum. But remember that VPNs only protect transit, not necessarily endpoint attacks and IP demasking. Once you step outside your network, there is no real security. Ask darknet Tor users.

Not every VPN is working in that manner I believe VPNs like NordVPN, Surfshark VPN, Mullvad are lying in the safe jurisdiction and have no relation with government or institutions. I came across https://www.bestvpn.co/reviews/surfshark/ this VPN review and was pretty convinced to get it similar to the last time when I opted for one of the best VPN to unblock Netflix libraries.

I use NordVPN, but I still wear my tinfoil hat and condom 24/7. Gotta cover my bases.

My totally paranoid network engineer colleague uses hidemyass VPN. He's really paranoid so it's probably legit.

Isn't using a VPN only part of a layered security template?

Trying to lock down one thing without employing a locked down browser/firewall/encryption etc helps, but isn't 100% secure. Even Tor says it isn't the end all for security. (it has a vpn feature too).

I think most people actually have problems because of poor surfing practices and opening attachments in their mail, lapsed security updates and severely old leaky OS being used. Most people don't encyrpt their cell phones either.

I am no expert, but I have common sense and I'm not afraid to use it.

Honestly, not everyone knows how to run her or his vpn and I still want to keep my privacy at least a bit protected to the least I can do is use one of the vpn providers. I use Surfshark and I hadn't had any problems with it, I do believe that my data is safer

It depends on your threat model.
Are you avoiding the MPAA on piratebay? No worries.
Are you Edward Snowden trying to contact the media from Hong Kong? Now it matters.

Except...how the VPN routes matters. Does everyone make sure to enable split tunneling or destination-only tunnels? Are you examining the trust and keystore after the client installs and sets up the tunnel for new CA certs?

If not, now all your traffic traverses the VPN and can be intercepted, and potentially decrypted. If DNS is also proxied over the tunnel, now you should be worried that alt-certs may be presented and under threat of MITM.

                  Be careful.

I have been looking into a VPN for a while. NordVPN I believe is a pretty good one. I recall checking into their logging policy as in if THEY record were you have been.

Specifically they do NOT have a logging policy.
