My phone's battery seems to be going crazy lately and the phone itself is right at 2 years old.
I purchased the phone outright so there is only a monthly unlimited fee.
From reading the horror stories on the internet when your 2 year plan is running out they mess with your service so you buy another phone.
I don't have a 2 year plan so this sounds a bit crazy.
Symptoms are the phone will shutoff or power down even though it says 35% on the battery indicator. I plug it in and it will charge to 100% really quickly or take hours to do so using the factory supplied turbo charger.

Is it worth throwing a new battery at this phone?
I have heard it can be refurbished is this true?
All Verizon wants to do is sell me a new phone at another $850.
I use text I use the phone and I browse the internet.
The rest of the features rarely if ever get used.

To date, the only manufacturer who had been caught doing this is Apple. Their firmware update slowed on older iPhones and they did this on the sly. When caught, they claimed it was to save battery life and offered a nice $29 battery replacement plan as their "sorry we got caught" peace offering. They got lucky and no one sued. Incidentally, when I took advantage of this offer for my iPhone 6S, they discovered the battery of my phone has swelled up and they actually gave me a new iPhone 6S as a replacement, for $29. Pretty nice deal.

In your case, a 2 year old phone is still pretty new, if the battery replacement cost isn't very high, I'll say go for it.

If you have Amazon Prime, there are also Verizon phones you can buy using Amazon Prime for pretty nice prices. A Moto X for example, can be had for $139.99.

I know absolutely nothing zero NADA zilch about phones so they usually sell me on the super sucker deal.
I went to eBay but if you don't speak the language you quickly reach failure mode.

I did call a phone repair shop in our local shopping mall and they said $50 for the battery so for that price I am going to give it a try

Just got back from the phone repair store.
They have to pull the front of the phone off to replace the battery which puts purple lines on the screen.
When they change the battery he said they need to change the screen totaling $159.
On a good note he said I could buy this phone for $145 unlocked whatever that means.

All Verizon phones are unlocked, it was a deal they had to do with FCC when they were sued for locking their phones so that you cannot use a phone you purchased from Verizon and use it on an alternative carrier such as U.S. Mobile. Basically it means nothing.

If the $145 phone is a new one, it'll be a good buy but I suspect it is refurbished ones. If that's case, give how new your phone is, you might as well have them replace the screen too and keep it.

Unlocked NIB LG V20 is about $200, but Tmobile.

I love this line if phone but the battery has always been an issue with me as well! I replaced the battery on my first one and I noticed the phone would get hotter than but it did take away the battery issue for me!! Another thing I would do is use the extended battery mod and it would be like a new phone. I also would do this (quite often) which is to recalibrate the phone battery you let it die completely then fill to the top twice in a row it should be able to drain to 0 after that but it'll need to recalibrate quite often. I don't have that one anymore ended up getting the Moto Z3 running like $350

All the online reviews for a refurbished phone were terrible. You get a nice phone with a bad battery and since I already have one no sense getting a second problem.
I told the guy at the repair shop to order me a new battery new screen and a new rear camera.
Comes out about $100 less than a newer low end phone and no two year plan.

My motorola Droid turbo xt1254 will be four years old this summer. I replaced the battery last summer at an indy phone fix-it place, I think it was about $50 for a generic battery. Service is Verizon and phone bought thru Verizon. Still works like a charm so no plans to change it any time soon. Been doing the same thing with the kids and wife's iPhone. I'm done with the upgrading every two years scam. New batteries solved all our problems last year.
