    Win 7 desktop icons wierd

Windows 7 Pro 64bit. This months Tuesday update terminated with failed update due to lack of space. At that point most of my desktop icons had the simple white box icon overlaid on top of the correct icon.
I can't fix them through the Properties box. It lets me select a new icon but the overlay stays on top.

I have deleted the iconcache.db from both my user and the administrator. I noticed the Desktop folder under both was marked ReadOnly. I undid that but no change.

The built in Windows icons (RecycleBin, Computer, Network, etc) are fine.

I did clear space and re-did the updates just fine.

Using small icons the actual icon gets covered. Changing to large icons the problem overlay is in the lower left. This 'smells' familiar but my 70 year old brain just does not remember. I already went into Folder Options and checked and unchecked the Use Check boxes option.

    Help!

    @Marauder2003

Sounds like you need to do some house cleaning, or either a bigger hard disk, or a second hard disk.
If you're using an SSD, and it's full, this can cause problems up to, and including SSD failure. Either way, no matter what SSD, or HDD you have, if it's full, or near full, that's a problem.

Do the icons still function the way they're supposed to?
Can you create a new shortcut icon that both appears, AND functions normal?
Did you REBUILD your icon cache, instead of simply deleting it?

Here's something you can try first:

Open your registry editor. Click start. in Windows Search, type "regedit".

    When in RegEdit,

    Click FILE.
    Click EXPORT.
    Name it BACKUP
    Save. Default is "Documents".

While in the registry editor, navigate to:

    \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile.

Look for "ISshortcut" in the right pane.
DELETE it. Don't worry, it's perfectly safe to do so. What it does, is remove the little "shortcut" check mark, that appears in the lower, left corner of your shortcuts, exactly where your problem seems to be.
If "ISshortcut" is corrupted, deleting it will fix the problem.

    Reboot.

If you actually want the icon arrows back, if it doesn't fix the problem (They annoy me), you can reverse it by using "Import" in Registry editor/FILE/IMPORT.

    Reboot.

I don't have time to type out and explain how to REBUILD your Icon cache, so here's a link on how to properly do this:

How to Rebuild the Icon Cache in Windows If one or more of your icons are not displaying correctly, or that your icon cache is corrupted, then you might consider rebuilding the icon cache to reset and reload the icon images into the icon cache in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. This will not...

No matter what, I *HIGHLY* recommend you "De-Crap" your hard disk, before it causes you some real problems.

    Good luck.

      Dragunov

Editing the registry fixed it. Many thanks.

As for space, the Windows folder is 46 gig. ProgramData is 10 gig

At the time of update failure the C drive had 600 meg available. I did a standard Windows Disk Cleanup and available space is now 12 gig.

        Sort of fixed.

Adding a new shortcut I get the problem on that shortcut.

And with the registry entry gone I lose the Pin to Taskbar in the right click Menu.

Try clearing your icon cache https://social.technet.microsoft.com...orum=w7itproui

          1. Click the Start button, and click Computer .

          2. On the Tool bar, click Organize and choose Folder and Search Options .

          3. Click the View tab, and check to select the Show hidden files and folders option , and click OK .

          4. Then, enter the following directory:

          %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local

          5. Find the IconCache.db file, and rename it as IconCache.db.old.

          6. Close the window, and restart the computer.

Iconcache.db has been deleted multiple time.
