Virus or ?

Yesterday afternoon I was searching for parts for my boat motor. On one site I went to, I immediately get a ding ding ding warning sound and a pop-up window with a voice saying my laptop is infected and I must call Microsoft at some phone number. I attempted to quickly close the tab tono avail so just pressed the power button and forced a shutdown.

Ever since, I'm getting lagging and unresponsiveness with both Firefox and Microsoft Edge browsers. Ran a full virus scan with Avhast which said it found no problems. Have tried restarting a few times but no change. Am running another full scan now.

How furked am I?

Pretty f** if you cant get internet and system cant clear it. My best advice and what I did was download malwarebytes(its free) from a different pc, transfer it on a usb and put it on your infected pc then run the system.

Next time that happens, hit Ctrl Alt Del. Go to task manager, click on your browser, click "End Task". Close out your browser that way.

If AVAST says you're not infected, you're probably not (IF you're up to date).
Use Malwarebytes to run a scan.

This happens to me on occasion, when I'm hunting obscure drivers for computers.

This is a scam, it locks up your browser, so just shut your browser down through Task Manager.

NEVER CALL THE NUMBER!!

You should get an external drive, download Macrium Reflect Free, and image your drive once a month/weekly, or every time you make changes. That way, you can re-image if you have any doubts.

The reason you're running a little crappy, is because you did a hard boot. Windows 10 doesn't like being hard booted, especially if you have updates in the queue.

Do a good cleanup with Ccleaner, run Malwarebytes, you should be GTG.

They install an executable file on your computer, via "Tech Support" from someone who calls himself "Mike Smith", or "Gary Johnson", with a suspicious "Indian" accent. (Scamming isn't illegal in India). They will spam your phone once in a while, claiming they have found "problems" on your PC. Don't fall for it.

Re-installing Windows is a pain. An external hard drive, and Macrium Reflect, is the way to go here.

Best argument for using Macrium Reflect, and an external drive, is Ransomware. You get Ransomware, you can restore from a Macrium backup, and it's like it never happened.

A 500gb mechanical drive ($25 off Ebay), or a 1tb mechanical drive (around $40 off Ebay), an external USB 3.0 drive caddy ($7-$20 off Ebay), and Macrium Reflect (free), and 15 minutes once a week/every other week/monthly, can save you a LOT of frustration!

Ran Ccleaner then Malwarebytes. MWB said it found 19 issues - all PUP.Option something so I put them all in quarantine. Restarted and the lagging/non-responsiveness issues are gone!

If they're something you're not using, just use the "Delete" option. They were there, most likely even before that happened.

That popup was triggered by code on the web page. If you call the number some scumbag will try to talk you into giving them control of your computer to fix it. They will then password encrypt your hard drive and demand payment to unlock it.

It appears that I was hasty in declaring victory. Just got finished putting new headlights in my Accord and jumped online to look something up. Webpage I was trying to access didn't load fully and got a Network Protocol Error. The weird thing is the issue is intermittent - sometimes a page or site loads right up.
