Free Antivirus, Recommended? If so, which ones?

I've been paying for Norton for a few years now and am wondering if I'm throwing $ away.

What do the techies here recommend? I've been using Norton 360 so far.

Don't know if I'd trust my system to a free antivirus. I have found the PCMag reviews to be useful. I tend to stick with the editors' choice each year: https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372364,00.asp

Thanks for the suggestion but I have Frontier FiOS. Ever try working with their customer service? It's a ****show. Every.Single.Time. Every, and I do mean every, every time I call them for something they screw things up. And they charge me for it.

I've used the free version of Avast! and Malwarebytes for years. Happy with both.

Windows Defender (the one that comes with Windows) + common sense = all you need.

But if you lack common sense, then i'd recommend Avast.

Second, but I don't download pi-rate stuff anymore... Nor use IE, ever (only for intranet).
There is enough open source to freeware making pi-rate stuff not worth it.

I had a friend get hit with some stuff many years ago, and after a reboot, even old avast, back when it was new, cleaned his rig...automagically.

If you are on windows 7 use Microsoft Security Essentials and if you have Win8/10 already comes with Defender. The rest are just spyware/bloatware these days!

Norton is the worst. And most intrusive.
Years ago my mom said she probably had a virus cuz my sister used to click on everything. I installed avg and Norton came up as one of the issues.

Avast! Free antivirus has been proven the most effective AV out there by several studies. It's light, fast, and plays well with other software.

AVG Free paired with SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes
Both are free and do the job.
Regular Scanning, avoiding malicious sites will definitely help prevent getting those malwares/bloatware/spyware whatever you may call it.

Use either Avast or Avira. Both are very good and no where as intrusive as Norton.
