laptop keys not working

Anyway to fix keys not working on laptop.

I usually just replace the keyboard. Usually it is just a few screws, but sometimes it is a bear.

I'd check Youtube for keyboard removal, or teardown videos, then check K/Board prices on eBay for your model.

You can use a USB keyboard in the meantime. However, keyboard failure is not always the keyboard. A factory reset of your O/S, may restore keyboard functionality. A keyboard for a laptop typically costs between $12, and $25. They are not difficult to replace. Most can be replaced in under two minutes. There's a YouTube video for your model somewhere. Find it, watch it, decide for yourself.

I'd back up my data, and try the factory reset first, unless it's just not feasible for you to do so

Now that you mention it, I do recall after updates on an all-in-one Win8.1 machine I was looking at for a coworker, the K/board and mouse stopped working. A Windows Refresh (not sure if that term was used back then) resolved it. I think the driver got corrupted during a sleep-timeout in the middle of windows updates.

You can first try uninstalling your keyboard driver in Device manager, reboot, see if that works before doing anything else. Your computer will reinstall the keyboard driver on reboot.

You can also shut down Win10 updates, the same as Win7, and re-enable it when you want to do updates. I do this:

Shut off Win10 Updates.

Image the machine.

Enable updates, update machine. If updates bork the machine, Re-pull the image.

I posted instructions for shutting off Win10 updates somewhere in this sub forum. If you want to do this, and can't find it, I can re-post the directions.

is it the whole thing not working or just some keys? could just be dirty. You can usually pull individual keys to clean under there. Did that for wife's laptop after a soda spill. Be careful, I broke the tabs on one of the arrow keys and it never did go back on. Also take a picture of the key layout before you start, not every keyboard has an identical setup.

I assume there are physical issues which requires a k/b replacement, or the whole thing wouldn't work... not just a portion.

YEP! 60 screws, motherboard removal, optical drive removal, keyboard comes off in three pieces. Not fun. Not all THAT bad, but takes a bit to do. However, the keyboard is $19.99. Not too bad for a Mac part.

If the keyboard was working fine before the ransomeware, then I doubt it's a keyboard problem.
