own a previous gen simplisafe system; wouldn't hold for the batteries in the base lasting more than a couple days off of power, but you won't need a hotspot with it; it has its own cellular onboard (either tmo or verizon, last i checked). If you can get power (from a light socket, for example), this would be my thought.

hidden trail cam might be a good one too, if you can hide it.

Do have to check if there is good cell service in the storage unit, with the door closed.

This is almost exactly the type of router that I built using a small SBC and PCMCIA header. This one has a 5000mAh battery as backup, and up to 128GB of storage via SD Card. It runs OpenWRT (Linux), so you can set it up as a VPN server and DDNS client as well. 2X hardwired Ethernet ports and USB as well.

ETA: One thing to be aware of, that has changed since the 3G days, is that T-Mobile (and maybe AT&T) now exclusively use IPv6 for cell clients and carrier-grade NAT for outbound IPv4 connections. That means that inbound IPv4 connections can not be established directly. Either connect to such a server natively on v6 via your internet connection, or have the router automatically connect to a v4 VPN server as a client and therefore establish a tunnel via the providers NAT gateway.

good point. verizon is probably better in that respect, but it may vary.

with simplisafe, also bear in mind what service is good in your area (tmo vs verizon). they're supposedly doing better checking coverage now, but mine shipped with a tmo module, and it was very picky about placement. called them up and discussed it, and they sent me a verizon module to swap in, and a return envelope to ship the tmo module back, no charge.
