Be careful with software RAID like that provided in Windows. If your machine ever dies your data will not be accessible. The only way to access your data on individual drives created via software RAID is to first break the mirror via the OS. If at any time your motherboard/OS combo dies before you break the mirror, your data will be lost.

If I were creating at RAID 0 array, I would use a stand-alone controller, or ensure the motherboard I was using had one built-in.
If you're simply cloning a SSD to a HDD, there is no difference in how the HDD performs. It is still limited to the speed of the drive.

Sure it is. You want to keep the SSD as long as possible. Continual write/rewrite/erase operations will deteriorate any SSD over time.

I have a few 960gb SSD's. One has a 95% health rating over 3 years of heavy use, writing and rewriting data. The other two, are used in my gaming machines, and the only write/rewrite cycles on them are saved games. They're both still at 100%. all three drives are the same age.

      Maybe I'm just OCD.

As much as I want to keep the 1tb samsung ssd that is sitting in a box, it doesn't seem to add much value over an hdd for data storage. If I was playing games and wanted a drive for programs to live on it would make sense.

Where it might make sense is to put it in an older laptop to speed things up a bit. Or, in my old system which will be relegated to a garage computer for when I need to look something up.

There I go, justifying the purchase again.

The 1tb SSD will make a huge difference in an older computer. I'd keep it for that reason alone, especially, if you got a good deal on it. Doesn't make sense to return it, since you already have it, and have a use for it.

        But that's just me.

Yeah it will. The old computer has an ssd in it now, but it is a 120gb and full. It will have a bunch of free space though as I pull stuff off of it and transition it to the new computer.

I got the new drive for $130 so it was a deal, but ssd prices do seem to be dropping pretty consistently.

I've always been a bit OCD, when it comes to computers. Probably why mine last so long, and give me no problems.
Most people would be happy that they have 95% health after three years. I still have MFM drives that work.

That IS a good deal! I'd keep it.

I opened it and put it in an old laptop that wasn't working. Laptop works again so I ordered a 500gb for the laptop the 1tb will take the place of 120gb in the old desktop.

I had purchased a new laptop as well, but it will go back now that the old laptop is up and running. I think.
