Can a monitor make a chirping sound

The last couple of weeks I've been hearing a single chirp coming from what seems to be my monitor (24" Asus LCD). A single chirp every other day at first. And in the last 3 days I've heard that single chirp twice a day. What can make such sound in a monitor? It's not loud at all and sounds like some kind of alarm trying to go off with an almost dead battery, if that makes sense. Looked around and found nothing near my computer that could make such a sound. So I'm left to believe it is indeed coming from the monitor.

I've had this monitor for about 7 years, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's going bad.

What is the model number of your monitor? Does it have built-in speakers?

It's Asus VH242H and yes it does have built in speakers. I have it connected via regular DVI cable.

        Several things come to mind:
        1) possibly interference from something placed nearby? I'm reminded of the old CDMA phones that would buzz audio speakers when transmitting handshakes
        2) maybe some software driver glitch? Drivers updates? Disable audio to your monitor in your speaker settings in your OS?
        3) It's remotely possible there is some component failing in your monitor (if the noise is very quiet). Unless you see some secondary symptoms though, I'd doubt it.
        4) speaker hardware could be going out. Absolute last ditch effort: open the back panel and clip the speaker wires, then insulate the ends somehow (electrical tape, shrink tubing, desolder, etc)

Not sure what else I'd suggest without being able to hear the noise

You can pull power, plug it back in after hitting the power button to see if it is just a power hiccup, but I'd replace it.

          Asus 23" LCD @ $134.99

You can get really cheap monitors at local eWaste places that sell functional hardware companies have replaced with newer tech and just scrap the old.

Pawn shops, and such have monitors and TVs that can be used as monitors for pretty cheap if you need to go that route.

I haven't seen LCDs catch on fire, but I have seen tube monitors/terminals let the smoke out... plumes.

Could it be a smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm with old batteries that happens to be in the same general area as the monitor?

            Or perhaps faulty bugging devices.

The sound is coming from right in front of me. The smoke detector is in the hallway good 15 feet away. I went ahead and set the volume to 0 on the built in speakers. it was set at 50. Hopefully that was it. Really don't want to spend money on a new monitor as I just bought a printer because my old one took it's final dump. And I also want a new gun. Priorities

do you have external speakers? what if you output it to external speakers.. that'll help isolate if the issue is with the monitor or the pc outputting the speaker.

alternative... shut down the pc or remove the mic output to pc. and see if it's a monitor problem or hter's a program that creates a chirp sound.

yea i've been using external speakers forever. the chirp sound is just so random and so quick that i can't really pin point it. but sure does sound like it goes off right around the monitor.

I had a similar problem. At precisely 12 midnight the computer desk in my bedroom would chirp 3 times pause and chirp 3 times again.

Since I was always already in bed I just ignored it. eventually it stopped.

When I moved I discovered one of the kids had dropped a $4.99 wristwatch behind my desk.

At work, I use headphones, no problem. But at work, there is this instant messenger program. When I first started using it, it would make a sound sending and receiving. I thought, where did that sound come from. It came from the monitor, totally separate of the computer. I was able to turn the sound down on the monitor. Check your monitor.
