    PC stopped working

My pc shows an amber light and fan stays on loud. Monitor shows no signal. It is old so should I recover hard droive and get a new one which I plan to do anyway. Has some pics and files I would like to recover. I tried rebooting unplugging , etc.

Flip the power switch off, or unplug.
Hit the power button a few times.
Flip the power switch to on, or plug power cable back in.
Hold INS/INSERT on the keyboard when powering on.

If your PC powers on when power is applied you will need to hold the INS(sert) key while applying power.

Sometimes this resolves whacky settings in the BIOS(/Firmware).
    Just something to try.

You should be able to pull data from another rig (new rig) w/out issue after plugging in this data drive, unless you encrypted the drive/data, but I can't speak to that, as I don't do it.

Try reseating all the cards and memory modules.

+1 to unplugging the cord from the PSU. It sometimes resets/unsticks the unit.

When you power up, do you hear the beep from the POST (power on self test) and then the HDD rattling away? PC should run the POST no matter what, without anything else connected. Then you would get the no keyboard error next.

Perhaps the video cable needs cleaning and reseating. Monitor shows "no signal"...black screen or words to that effect?

Try replacing the little battery on your motherboard as well.

Yank the hard drive and use a different machine to pull the data you want. If it is old school, time for an upgrade.

Is it dirty? Clean it with some air, unplugged.

Mine would power up for just a moment then shut down, it was a dead Mobo battery. You said it is old so something to check off the list. Easy and cheap to replace.

I wouldn't waste time with the motherboard battery unless you have one on hand to try (CR2032). All the mobo battery does is hold the clock settings, you should still be able to boot with a dead one.

Make sure you did not blow the mother board up with a bad power supply. Check capacitors to see if any have a popped top on them.

I hope you have backups of all your important stuff. It boggles my mind how most do not.

If the computer is ancient, just get a new one. Then, after it's completely set up (NOT before or while), you can plug your old hard drive into a second bay and access it there if it's readable. If your new computer won't accommodate your old drive because it's an older type or something, then you can buy a separate case with power supply for the old drive, install the old drive in the case, and then access it as an external drive.

If your problem is your hard drive died, good luck with that. Sometimes the data can be recovered but it can often cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. For some reason, recovery services charge an arm and two legs.
