So, in looking into other more in-depth reviews, the TP-Link router I ordered and is due to be delivered tomorrow isn't rated as well as I assumed and I've decided to return it. Which of the ASUS routers below would you experts recommend I order instead? To recap, we (two of us) don't stream much, don't game, live in a mobilehome - not a huge house.

Somebody explain to me what is best to use when creating a mesh network?
If that is what it is called?Comment

What people refer to mesh networking for WiFi is really roaming between APs. True mesh networking is decentralized and utilizes least-cost routing and asynchronous transmissions between different nodes. WiFi is inherently single-homed, unless you have split your radios on your adapter to talk to multiple APs simultaneously.
Roaming works by configuring a single SSID in the same way bound to multiple APs that uses a out-of-band channel as backhaul between them. In structured scenarios, that's Ethernet, but for home use its often just more WiFi. WDS utilizes part of the broadcast spectrum for bridging and most "mesh" consumer routers utilize one radio for backhaul when performing this topology.
In the case of Orbi, it's really a star topology and not mesh, with one of the 5G radios dedicated to backhaul. Other vendors may actually do node-node decentralized routing, but that is harder to configure.
Most of the vendors that have tri-band APs support roaming one way or another, and do compete on this feature.
The only advice I can give here is that better radios matter when doing AP-AP bridges and Ethernet backhauls are a better recommendation.Comment

I have that one. It works well. The Nighthawk has good reviews when I was looking and given your use case I’d say that $89 with the $10 coupon right now is a great deal.

If you need more range you could add one of these that are sometimes on sale for $50 - work well with the Nighthawk or a TPLINK AC. I Actually get a signal from the Nighthawk through walls and into another building to the RE450. Have one RE450 setup with the Nighthawk and another with a TPLINK... both work. People do love their $300-$500 MESH setups.
