does your chromebook have a loud fan?

i know nothing about computers, but one thing i know is it sucks when the fan starts whirring. I need a new device that i only use for surfing forums, watching youtube . It seems a chromebook is all i need. am i right? and what about the noise factor. thanks

When my son gets up, I'll ask him if his school Chromebook whirls up the fan, ever.
I have never heard it, but I have limited exposure.
The ones we were using for just browser order entry didn't have a vent, as I recall, but that was a few gens. ago.

A chromebook seem like it would serve your purpose, but use a spam account for the tied-in Gmail account you are required to use, if you aren't using "guest".

FYI, my son says his school Chromebook has no vent or fan, and he said he didn't know how it stayed cool. It is probably ARM based, like a smartphone...

Get yourself an HP Stream 14 (*NOT* the 11, or 13!). Download the Chrome O/S. Use that as a Chromebook.

Advantages?

Can be upgraded to 8gb/RAM.
"U" class Intel N 3060 processor at 1.6ghz. Doesn't have, nor need a fan.
Fairly decent graphics.
Easy to repair, but there's really nothing in it to break, other than the display, and RAM.

Can be purchased for around $100 from Ebay.
Just as good as a $500 Samsung chromebook.
2xUSB 3.0 ports.
1x USB 2.0 port.
HDMI port.
Headphone jack.
SDCard reader.

Disadvantages?

As a Chromebook? Absolutely none.

As a WINDOWS computer, you get around 7 hours battery life.
With Chrome O/S, you get nine or ten hours.

A 65 watt charger off any HP15 laptop will work with it. $6 off Ebay, if you need to replace it.

Comes with Win10 Home, however, if you don't completely disable Windows updates, the measly 32gb EMMc drive will get filled quickly, and will render the computer useless.

If you kill windows 10 updates, and get an external SSD, you can leave Windows on the EMMc drive, and install your programs, and keep your data on an external drive, or the SDcard. However, SDcards are SLOOOOW!

They are ARM based (or Atom). That's why I recommended the HP14 Stream. REAL Intel processor, and upgradeable ram.

For the past 5 years, I've owned a Samsung chromebook similar to this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=6239912

The power consumption is so low that it doesn't even have a fan inside. When I opened it up, it just had a copper heat pipe contacting the Intel chip with a wide aluminum heat spreader at the opposite end.

My Chromebook has no fan and if it does you could open it up de-dust it and work on the heat sink which is making the fan work.

I have often wondered why I've never heard the fan in my mid 2014 iMac. Either it's not working or has never been called up by the CPU, a total mystery unless being so quiet it's inaudible or my hearing loss is worse than I thought.

Old notebooks like the Lenovo T4xy series can be had for CHEAP.
T-430's go for ~$100 on eBay used with 4-8GB of RAM. Slap in a good sized (512GB) SSD for about $60-$100 (~$140 for a Samsung 940 Pro, or ~$100 for an 840 Pro), and you should be set. I'd blow out the fan-grill 1st, from both directions.
The Samsung 850 EVO I have as my data drive on my main ATX rig, on SATA2:

The major drawback is people leaving them sitting on a pillow/couch/beadspread and blocking the intake fan on the bottom. (Acers for kids are a major issue, I understand.)

SSD prices have already hiked for Christmas, especially Samsungs, so I'd wait on the SSD for a month, or two, unless you find a good Black Friday price.
