many are aware of the merger of Verizon/AOL and Yahoo. the upcoming revisions to the privacy policy make my continued use of these platforms untenable. (how it comes to be I still use them is really neither here nor there ). clearly I'm ignorant of tech, probably 'cause I'm old.

so I want to download my e-mails and address books onto my hard drive for posterity.

using windows 10 I can easily create appropriate folders. but I'm stuck on accessing/downloading. not even sure where to start.

IMAPSync. It's a command line script for syncing folders and messages between IMAP accounts. There is a web-portal for it as well, but I'm not sure how trustworthy it would be to enter in your info and have all of your data and passwords traverse third party servers.

In your scenario I would just create a folder called "yahoo" and sync the entire Y!Mail tree under that one folder on your current email account on the new provider.

Just be aware that there are two versions of imapsync, and the free one is hosted on GitHub and uses Perl. The paid version is a compiled binary and is available for most platforms.

If all you want to do is download the messages to your PC, set up the account on a MUA like Outlook and look for options to perform a full sync and save the account to an "offline PST" file. That makes an archive, but it's not "live."

yes, all i want is an archive. both yahoo and verizon/aol offer to sync imaps but I didn't see anything called "offline pst". I'll check again, thanks.

The sync and offline part is done on your PC's email client.
