Kindle Fire HD6 - Multiple taps/presses to get response

I have a Kindle Fire HD6 that I purchased new for $30 last year from someone who had never used it. It works as it should for the most part as an ebook reader but annoyingly requires multiple taps/presses of the screen at times.

I regularly check for and apply updates. Does anyone know what the issue(s) might be and if there is a fix or is it just the way it is with these older Kindles?

    I have an old HD6.
Sometimes it doesn't register "close tab" finger taps.
When that happens, just rotate the screen 90 degrees and hit the close tab.
It wasn't an issue when I first got it, it developed over time after being dropped a few dozen times.

Another trick if you only have one tab open is to open a second, then close the first. Even my new HD8 does that sometimes.
