    Popup Ads Out of Control

Any one with insight into the plague of popup ads on my iMac.

    Updated to latest OS X

Found all suspicious Applications and deleted

    Deleted everything Flash

Spent some time looking for relevant Apple Support articles

No joy, sometimes have to close popup windows 8 or 10 times to get to what I want to do.

Strangely Brownell's website seems especially bad. I search for Mossberg Safety Screw and get a new window with reloading presses.

    Any suggestions?

Personally, I use a browser plugin to disable flash and javascript. It breaks half the internet and then you have to hunt for selectively whitelisting trusted domains.... but it'll keep you safe even in the darkest of the interwebs alleys. You'd be shocked how bad internet security has gotten. Most of the H1B slaves building half the internet don't know what the flip they're doing. They just copy code from stackoverflow until something seems to work.

I use firefox with the add-on "noscript"

Click in your browser addy field, and try typing "chicks with" (no quotes) and see if anything pops up... ... ...

I'm on Windows, maybe it's for macs too, but I use ghostery. Seems to work well.

                  OP,

I assume you are aware of the MacRumors forums?

Chrome + uBlock Origin and a raspberry pi with pi-hole installed take care of the ads for me.

Check System Preferences, Network, advanced, DNS - sometimes an app can get in and change your preferred DNS to a malware site.

On OS X, you should "man scutil" to learn how to interface with BSD configurations, which will include DNS settings. /etc/resolv.conf is not used in BSD OS X, although /etc/hosts is for overrides, so check that, too.

This is so far beyond my level of understanding.

I swear, my first thought was that you're telling me to check my muffler bearings, or top up my taillight oil.

Thanks to all for your replies. I'm thinking I might need to take it into the shop.

I'm really still living back in the days of the Commodore 64.
