does 0.5 GB ram make a difference on an Android Tablet?

I am trying to decide between two different Android tablets. One has 1.0GB Memory and the other has 1.5GB Memory. One operating system it KitKat the other is Lollipop.

Is there a big difference between 1/2-GB of Memory?

I won't be playing any games. I will mostly use it for emails, online commerce (buy stuff), the Torque automotive app, and GPS mapping/tracking feature.

It's always a good idea to go with the newest operating system. .5 GB memory is negligible if there is an option for a micro sd card.

What kind of tablets. I can't remember the last time a good tablet got released with 1or 1.5 gb of ram. These days you're looking at 4-6 gb of ram. I would go with the higher ram either way especially if it's KitKat. Older operating system generally uses less reaources. So if you can get less resource overhead and more ram that's the way to go. Unless you're getting a Kindle though buying a low end Android tablet is asking for a pain in the *****

It is really about everything together. Bus speed, amount of RAM AND RAM speed, number and gen. of Processors, speed of internal flash, etc.

Make sure that if you need 5GHz (tethering is WAY better on 5GHz) that the device supports it.
I made the mistake of assuming that an 802.11N tablet supports 5GHz on my last 2 tablet purchases, but 802.11N only requires support for 2.4GHz WiFi to still be called 802.11N.
In my book, an 802.11N tablet is not worth it, if it does not support 5GHz...
An 802.11AC requires 5GHZ to be part of the AC spec, as I understand.
I found that one-gen. behind, for only <$150 (including case with screen-cover) is well worth it, for about 1/2-3/4 the price, and if you crack the screen it won't be that big of a loss.

I had and issue on my Asus Memopad when in a dark room (or if you lean to get something) it would think the cover was being closed, and you then had to find the power button (depending on orientation) to wake her back up.

Personally I stay away from NERFED Android devices like Fire/Kindle/Nook, even if the price is low, as a non-nerfed Android can still run the reader apps (Fire/Kindle/Nook), just with MORE "Android" (apps/features).

I REALLY dig the LG products, as when they go to sleep/standby, a double-tap on the screen is all it takes, no fiddling with the power button.

They are Samsung 7" Galaxy close-out models. That is why they have the older operating system and only 1.*GB memory.

A friend of mine has one that is about 5 years old, and it still works, so I don't think I will have a problem with the older OS.

My usage involves logging, a lot of PDF browsing, emailing, forums, as well as running a few apps for work and I'm using a Samsung Tab 2 10.1 from 2012.

Runs like a champ and it never bogs down.

When it comes to PC's, I don't run hardware more than 2 years old but with tablets it's a whole different story.

Those old Samsung tablets are a different story, those will be good to go. I was thinking you were looking at the new cheap offbrand Android tablets you see for sale.
I'd go with whatever Galaxy tablet has more ram.

You CAN do comparisons between models with a google search like this one to compare specs (skip the 1st, and maybe second AD link, and you are golden):
google something like this w/no quotes "galaxy tab 10 vs LG GPAD X 8.0"

Also, check reviews on youtube for response times when thinking about a specific device.

My mother has a Galaxy tab 10", and a 7", and the LG G-Pad X 8.0" seems to be more responsive than both (and cheaper NIB, I think).

                Regarding TouchWiz-LAG:

Specifically, regarding the RAM QTY question, I have seen the devices with more RAM be more responsive, but not always, as there are the other factors that I mentioned before...
