Win 10 wakes up from sleep mode.....

Finally retired my 7 yr old Win 8 HP and bought a new Win 10 machine. Moved all my programs and data over (what a PITA!) from original disks and downloads for a "clean install". Computer didn't come with any bloatware. The problem is I prefer to put a computer into sleep mode and not shut down. I put it in sleep mode but I find it "awake", running at various times and also it even restarts immediately after putting it into sleep mode at times.

Now I understand Win 10 is a PITA when it comes to automatic update programs which is really stupid. I checked the "task scheduler" and found only 4 items, none which are set up to "wake the computer". Found out Windows Update can't be shut off or set to download when you want it to (guess I have to live with that stupid MS move). So is there a way to track down what programs are waking the computer up? Some sort of log program that tracks this, one that is in plain English that doesn't rely on cryptic geek speak? Any other suggestions on how to solve and nuke this stupid problem?

What say you CGN Brain Trust? I'm counting on you to prevent the need for hours of research combing through time wasting "online help" and forums! Please save me from this evil Win 10 fate!

(Got to get to work, will check back later, thanks!)

Check out a few things, moved some of the triggered events to a more appropriate time and at the same time. Still none of them have "wake from sleep" checked that would make them wake up the computer.

Try using hibernate instead of sleep. Mine stays "asleep" in hibernate mode. Starts almost as fast as from sleep mode.

My power icon doesn't give that option but doesn't mean it can't be turned on some how. Something to look into, thanks. Its Win 10 Pro, that might matter in a few things.

Is there a "Wake up on LAN" option that you can deselect in your network settings? Had to do that on my Win 7 pc that would randomly turn itself on.

I can't help with what is waking up your computer but there is a way to stop the auto downloads.
If you set your connection to metered, it will ask before downloading anything. You will get frequent reminders that a download is waiting, but it will not do it without your permission.

Thanks......I'm still checking into different triggers and conditions in the task scheduler. Also the meter connection idea is one I read about too. The strange part is a couple times I put it to sleep, it goes into sleep mode, then immediately wakes and restarts. Put it right back into sleep mode and it wakes again! 3 or 4 times in a row. This is not saying it happens every time I put it to sleep though. There has to be some underlying process going on for it to do that. Noticed this morning it was on before 8am, so I guess I need to look for a process starting around that time. Not even sure if its something in the task scheduler or not. Not really changing anything at this point just observing but any help is great.

I would just forget hibernation/sleep modes and just set your monitor to turn off after 15 min of inactivity. That's what I do. Less wear and tear on the hard drive.

Think I found the problem, f***ing Google! Or maybe one problem. GoogleUpdateTaskMachineUA 7:05:16am it started this task, didn't notice the computer on until just before 8. Looked at the triggers/conditions and nothing about waking up the computer. Looking through the system tools/event viewer 7:05:16 is the earliest time I found. Don't even think I have a Google App other than the search engine in the browser. Any helpful hints?

                    chrome?

open your task manager and end the googleupdate task. I had a similar problem with googletalk task not letting my monitor go to sleep. I also had a faulty usb controller that did not let my monitor enter sleep mode. Have any usb devices connected?

You might have hit on something, it maybe connected, maybe not. I have an ext hard drive that has like 300+ gigs of music that is connected by USB. When I moved it over to this computer decided to run check disk, defrag, etc since its about 10 yrs old. No problems. Started a surface test and it ran for a bit then locked up the computer. Tried to get it out of that state but no luck. Used the rest button couple times but went into a full screen chk dsk mode on the drive that went to 10% then stayed that way over an hour. Tried booting with f8, look for options to stop it, no luck. Finally unpluged the drive/USB connection and rebooted and it came back to normal start up. Restart again, no problems. Plug the USB back in, drive seemed to be working normal and I didn't lose the drive or music, good! Next shut down and restart (with the ext drive still plugged in) only the computers logo comes up but windows doesn't start, wait about 10 minutes, unplug the drive again and windows immediately boots and all works normal. I need to look into that more, perhaps theres still a conflict there that maybe related. Haven't plugged the drive back in yet but when I do perhaps run some more tasks on it that may clear any conflict.

Checked task manager, google update has already stopped. I'll let things slide for now and see if it wakes again in the am. Don't have chrome unless its lurking somewhere.
