    "Unlocked" cell phone issue

EDIT: I installed another messaging program and now she can receive and send MMS texts. The AT&T store told her this is a sprint phone and cannot be used and that she needed a GSM phone (which it is) and tried to sell her a $350 phone and up. They were of no help and are useless sales droids.

    Thanks to all who helped.

My MIL needed a new phone so rather than her getting suckered into a new $500 phone from her carrier (AT&T), I found her a unlocked G4, link below.

She has full functionality from what I can tell EXCEPT she cannot receive mms (pictures) messages. She gets the download button and when you click on that button in the text window it says it cannot download or the content is unavailable (something like that). I told her to take it into an AT&T store rather than call because she has no idea and wrote down what I think the problem is and that I think the APN settings need to be inputted/changed. I figured this was the likely problem thanks to google. So on Friday she went into an AT&T kiosk or store and they are telling her it's a Sprint phone. I told her to find the smart tech at the store, not the pretty person who sells phones.

    1) how can I tell if it's sprint and not unlocked
    2) is it salvageable?
    3) if it's sprint I'm going to have her try to return it unless somebody has a better idea.

    Help please!

This link describes which are compatible, it appears that the Sprint LG G5 is , but there was no listing
for the G4 model, so it may be on Sprints older network equipment'

I discovered several years ago that AT&T smart phones requires an internet plan to send MMS---pics & Vids

If it's an unlocked phone (ie only using stock android) and on AT&T there should be no issues with SMS working etc. However, this may just be an issue with an old version of the messaging software.

Here is the XDA forums about the phone (this is a phone firmware hacking site where they trade fixes and OS repairs, has a lot of good tech info)

Here are some things to try:

      - make sure you are on the latest firmware
      - try a different messaging app on the app store
      - try and reboot the phone (seems silly but it could have locked up)
      - pop the battery and do a full restart (not sure if batt is removable on this phone)
      - You can try a custom ROM after rooting (might be too advanced)
      while (bullets > 0 && target == 1){fire == 1;}

Check the APN settings. I believe smart phones should be set to "Nextgenphone" or "ATT Nextgenphone" Check out the AT&T web site first before you change the settings. They have a listing of APNs you can try.

The correct APN settings have been entered. I can surf the web, send texts, browse the net, make phone calls and send/receive regular texts. I can send MMS text messages with the default messaging app but cannot receive MMS pics. I verified that the phone can send pics/texts through FB messenger.

TLDR: As far as I can tell (I have the phone overnight tonight) the only thing not working is not able to receive photos through text messages.

I had a older Samsung that would only send or receive pics in texts when me data was on. Bought a newer model on Ebay for $75 and pics work just through text fine.

So I got "Messenger for SMS" or "Messenger" from the app store and now I can view MMS sent from other phones using that app as the default. So I can view and send mms.

Based upon that what should I do to try to get the default program to work?

all messenger apps are just APKs even the default ones.

                  According to this site:
If you’re not a fan of the stock text message app on the LG G4, there are many alternatives worth considering. The LG G4 has its own app for sending and

the default messaging app on the LG G4 is pretty crap and recommends using a secondary messaging app.

You did the right thing in downloading a new messenger, so I'd stick with it since LG's version seems rather garbage.

Thanks for the confirmation. Since it's not my phone and I'm no longer plugged into tech forums I was very leery of trying to update firmware or make other changes that could result in her phone not working at all and then my name is mud.

good call, even with the best prep, if a phone battery dies unexpectedly on a firmware update, it can brick the phone. Glad to see you have a solution!

It’s my understanding that locking is locking to the network.

So an AT&T locked phone will not work when you insert a sprint SIM.

Some phone, think blackberry, could have a corporate security policy on the device to limit options.

This security policy survives factory resets and needs software to remove.

Sounds like you have a different issue.

We just dumped ATT after 20 + years. Got tired of the BS support and pour over all service areas. When I tried to unlock our ATT phone before switching all ATT did was give us the run around. That's what finally did it for me.
So happy with Verizon now coverage is so much better even saved money every month.
                          Bottom line is ATT sucks.
