Rate My (Mostly) New PC Build

    Salvaged components:

    Corsair 750D Full ATX Tower
    LG Blu-Ray Writer
ASUS ROG STRIX RX 470 4GB

    New components:
    Intel Core i7-8700k
    ASRock Z370 Extreme4
    16GB Corsair Vengeance LED (White) 3200Mhz CL16
    Cryorig H7 Quad Lumi
Western Digital Black 256GB NVME SSD
    Crucial MX300 525GB SSD
Seasonic Focus Plus 80+ Gold 850W PSU

Note: I elected to not get a new GPU yet, fully realizing that i'm not taking advantage of the CPU. But I refuse to pay more today for a GPU that was cheaper when it came out over a year ago. Also, I chose the Cryorig H7 because I have no intention of overclocking YET. In a few years, once it starts slowing down a bit, I'll consider it and at that point get a better cooler.

Oh and, I forgot to mention, I have a bunch of white LED fans and I'm gonna bling bling the snot out of this thing.

Not sure what you mean by this. Have AMD GPUs escalated in value? I only use Nvidia so I'm not real familiar with what's happening in the other side. Otherwise, looks pretty solid.

Only other thing I would recommend is a premium sound card, especially if you play games or use your PC for multimedia. The difference in sound quality is noticeable.

A note about overclocking the i7 CPUs, I don't know about the 8700k in particular, but I have a 4790k Devil's Canyon CPU and it has very little overclocking headroom, maybe 10% if that, so for me it wasn't even worth the time put in. I'm sure your motherboard has auto overclocking software which may be good enough depending on what you use your computer for. Unless you're posting benchmarks, a hard overclock may not be worth it. For general use and gaming, you probably won't notice a 10% increase in CPU speed. YMMV

          1. Generally speaking as technology ages, it gets cheaper. GPUs that came out last year cost more today than they did when they first came out. The RX 470 is a mid-low tier GPU, so ideally I'd pair it with a 1080ti or something. The 1080ti is supposed to MSRP for $650ish, but they go right now for $750+. AMD GPUs are even worse; the ones that are MSRP for $200 are selling for $300-400. All this is due to the cryptocurrency craze killing the supply. I paid $169 for my RX 470 when it first came out; they went as high as $400 at one point USED. I'll wait for that market to stabilize before buying another GPU.

          2. The ASRock Purity Sound is pretty good from what I gather. But you're right about dedicated sound cards being better. It's just not a big priority for me.

          3. The factory boost clock is 4.7ghz, and guys are getting 5.0ghz pretty easily without crazy temps or vcore increases. I don't have much experience overclocking intels, but i've done my fair share on AMD Vishera's. It's a low priority since it's so potent out of the box, which is 100mhz faster than the nonK, and 400mhz faster than the i5. As for my motherboard, it has a 12-phase VRM and good software. Hopefully it overclocks well, but with the silicon lottery, who knows?

            So far, it costs 1 gen 4 G19 or 2 gen 3 g19s.

I would have gone with asus or gigabyte for a mobo. I hear those asrocks are hit and miss

I've heard the same things; but this particular board has a very high Newegg rating as well as YouTube review.

I got it from Amazon, so I did be able to get it taken care of it's it's bad.

In contrast, I have presently all Gigabyte and ASUS boards in my household without any issue; but in the past I've had DOA from both MFGs.

I think it's just a roll of the dice either way.

Definitely not Glock reliability in any case lol

I've used Intel CPUs exclusively since the original i7 came out, first one was an i7 920, which didn't overclock well at all. I got hardly any extra juice out of that thing, and no amount of vcore or other tweaks helped. Then I stepped up to a Sandy Bridge 2600k with a stock clock of 3.4 GHz, and was able to OC to 4.8 GHz fully stable with very little effort. That was worth it because it's a huge performance increase. Now my 4790k has a stock clock of 4 GHz and turbo of 4.4 GHz. I briefly tried a hard OC and couldn't get it past 4.4 GHz anyway, so I just let it be and let the turbo do its thing using my mobo software utility. I didn't spend a lot of time on it, but for a couple hundred extra MHz is just not worth it, especially if I would have to ramp up the voltage and shorten the life of the CPU.

That's my experience. Each chip is different though, some just have more headroom. Maybe you'll get a decent increase out of yours.

Haha, whatever floats your boat. What's funny is when I built my latest rig, I wasn't even paying attention to the color scheme but the parts ended up matching anyway, all red and black. With the exception of the white LED lights on the GTX 970s. But whatever, I don't care what it looks like as long as it runs well.

Get yourself an external audiophile grade DAC. It'll hook up via USB and bypass the internal sound card. Have the DAC supply sound to your amp and speakers.

aar is correct on the ASUS Brand ---

I'm upgrading everything on my desktop in mid to end of January ... so far I have 2100$ saved up ... I'm looking to drop arrrrrrrround 2600$ on new everything except the case ... I am using a Corsair Graphite 780T at this time ... so, no need to upgrade the case. Also keeping the power supply which I changed out about a year ago.

Tell up please ... what was the bottom line on your purchase for everything?
