Good afternoon im in the market for a new laptop for the wifey, she currently has a mac thats old and slow now she doesnt wamt to stay with mac and she is not using it for school anymore and jist doesnt like apple products, im looking for advice from all of you im not big on laptops and need to find a decent one under 800$. She will mostly be using it for general usage,printing things up not really for gaming. Thank you for any help.

New or used Lenovo Thinkpad. They're nice because it's easy to take the case apart to upgrade the RAM or install a new battery.
Lenovo hardware plays nice with Linux.Comment

Costco has some pretty good deals right now. I personally like Lenovos and for a general use 5lb laptop this Lenovo 320 8th gen i5 with plenty of RAM and a 1TB hard drive for $450. I have not had that one apart so I'm not sure how hard it would be to replace the 1TB HD with a 1TB SSD but that would rock.
Alternately this Dell (note coupon codes and rebate instructions on the slickdeals page) looks pretty decent.

Light, cheap, up-gradable with just a screwdriver if you want to add some RAM down the road, its a 2-in-1, looks decent as well. Has the 8th gen processor, which is a lot more powerful than some high-end laptop processors just a year ago.In case it wasn't obvious, nothing I write here should be interpreted as legal advice.Comment

That would be a great choice for anyone that wants a super portable 13". I usually recommend 13" for someone who is going to be hauling a laptop to school or traveling with a laptop a lot. For home and office use I prefer a 15". Well, I got my new MSI today. I now know why it was an "Open Box" computer. Whomever had it first, pooch screwed the O/S.... BADLY! And ruined the restore partition. Well, I checked with MSI, It hasn't been registered yet, so I did it. I now have the full, factory warranty.
That said, I reloaded Windows on it, and in the process of reloading the drivers. Courtesy of MSI's website.
I'll get it all set up, and will send an image to the D:\ drive, so I can pull it if I ever need to.
Macrium Reflect, there's just no substitute.
This thing has a Samsung, EVO 3rdGen PCI-e drive... From the end of post, to desktop, is an incredible, 3 seconds!
From pressing the power button, to desktop, is 10 seconds!
This thing's a frikkin' BEAST! Can't wait to start gaming on it.

What HD options etc did you go with on it?
My 10 year old macbook pro is on the way out. Will no longer connect to wi-fi (seems to be a common issue for the wi-fi card to eventually die on the older ones).
90% of the use is browsing calguns or watching netflix, using excel, etc. My wife does the occasional photo editing and stuff. No gaming or real video editing or anything though. I'd been looking at cheap "consumer" laptops but based on the other thread linked earlier and your posts now I'm looking at nicer machines. Cost is kinda an issue but if a $7-900 laptop is going to last me much longer and be trouble free vs a $400 laptop then I can probably spring the extra $$$.
Wifes last laptop was a samsung that crapped out after a year due to a battery issue I think? (Interested in checking it out if we mail it to you?).
