Windows Explorer crashing?

This AM on booting Windows Explorer crashed and restarted itself. (Not Internet Explorer) Also Windows Updater crashed. (I usually keep Updater on manual rather than automatic, but now it's on automatic startup and will not stay changed if reset to other options)

I started having weird boot delays and other erratic behavior after the latest upgrade of Malwarebytes.

I uninstalled Malwarebytes about two hours ago, but Windows Explorer dumped and restarted three more times since removing Malewarebytes.

I don't want the "restore" unless absolutely necessary.

Any ideas to the reason / cause ?

It's microsoft. Most of my XP related stuff will not work on the internet any more.

Which version of Windows? Try booting into safe mode. If it can boot into safe mode then you may have a fairly easy shot of getting things back up and running.

Windows 7.

The machine will boot but I suspect that when Windows Explorer crashes it is trying to access something, probable the Win updater??

This:
The server {9B1F122C-2982-4E91-AA8B-E071D54F2A4D} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout

As well as WE crash show up in event viewer.

The failure and restart shows up on the desktop, screens flashes at restart and some icons in the system tray disappear.

I just rebooted for the fifth time since the original boot at 0400.

At least I can get to Calguns---for now.

Yeah, my wife's XP machine is very limited but she has legacy stuff in genealogy that just isn't compatible with newer OS's. ...and wide carriage printers and no drivers for.

As far as anti-trust in technology, it's only going to get worse. You spend the money for the hardware, but will either rent or lease at so and so's whim and dictates or be stuck with expensive paper weights. That's already happening with MS.

Thanks Marauder, but I do not have issues with shutting down or booting...yet.

That said, for "complete" boot where every process is loaded has always taken time.

Your link and the update/DCOM issue may be worth looking into.

To make sure win-files are not corrupt?:
1) chkdsk /f (from the start menu, as admin if you are running in anything other than "Never Notify" UAC)

Reboot

2) sfc /scannow

3) System restore.

Give this a try:

Go to the following location c:\windows. Look for explorer.exe.
Then: Right-click on explorer.exe and select Run as administrator.

You may have extensions causing problems, disable them as a test.

Autoruns by sysinternals can help you, although you'll be overwhelmed if you can't recognize 3rd party registrations. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/autoruns

I'll give it a look see. If I can't figure it out, I'll give you a shout. Funny, yesterday and so far this AM no Explorer crash and Win. Updater worked. I did change Updater to manual rather than auto. Gut feeling makes me think the new upgrade of Malwarebytes (free edition) had something to do with the problem. However it shouldn't.

The first place to start is by testing the RAM. It's not all that unusual for a module to go bad.

If your RAM tests out ok then I'd run chkdsk to check the drive and if that doesn't do the job I'd just reinstall Windows.
