Hiking and driving GPS?

Are there any topographical hiking GPS units that can also be used as a driving directions GPS? Our car Garmin is giving up the ghost and we go to places with zero cellular signals.

Some of our cars are too old to have built in GPS...

You could probably download a map and use those.

Yes, there is an app called Maps.me that does this. You download the maps on Wi-Fi, then it works with the GPS signal when out and about, with no need for a cellular signal.

There are also California Trail Maps which I find a bit more confusing. I have a hiking Garmin that I loaded with USGS topographical maps. It works great for cycling or off-road trails.

Phones suck a lot of battery on GPS though, so you need an external power source to recharge when hiking.

I have a Garmin 64st handheld unit with the 100K USA Topo map and a LMT60 in the truck.

The handheld will not give you the directions like the in vehicle units, but will show you where you are. You can also program a route and follow that.

Garmin GPSmap64 is the best I've found.
I use my phone in the car, but in the field hunting or hiking I use the GPS.
Works everywhere, better signal as well as my map program on the 64 is amazing.

There are overlaps in functionality, but the navigation Garmins have bigger screens, voice, fastfood/gas/etc., info. The sport Garmins will get you turn-by-turn navigation but you download a route file and not just put an address in.

I've got cycling Garmins, navigation Garmins and even the inReach (really cool). But, they all serve best in the area designed for.

If you use an smartphone app, be sure you have GPS in your phone and you MUST be able to run plugged-in as they drain power big-time. We like the smartphone app that comes on the iPhone because it color-codes traffic! My wife/navigator is always keeping us informed on that. I believe Tom-Tom has a navigation unit that will re-route you based on traffic.

Obviously, you can spend a lot of money and time on all these different devices. I know.
