"Quit having this problem by not using Apple product anymore?"

If plugged into iTunes on a machine w/out the songs/library won't they get deleted from the device when syncing?

I know there were 3rd party apps that would do this, AND drop the songs to real filenames, but that was years ago...

There is a program that will do it for a nominal price. Do a google search for it..

I have an old iPod that I was able to grip the music from using a live cd of puppy linux/slacko.
Boot to the cd, plugged in ipod, navigate to music folder and copied it to external drive.
Not sure if this will work on every gen of ipod/iphone. YMMV.
I prefer open source computing these days.

Older ipods have the option to enable disk use, then you have to enable hidden folders and the music files will be in them, copy and paste. Been a few years since i did it, but that was how.

iTunes should do it. May have to google the process.

There are free third party apps that'll do it. Google is your friend.

Plug your ipod into a Windows PC. Make sure it mounts. Open/explore the ipod like a hard drive. Go to file options and show hidden files. There should be a folder that shows up called ipod control. Within this folder will be your music, tucked into folders called F01, F02, etc. Once you copy that folder to a HDD, you'll be able to open your files in a media player, like Winamp or like Windows Media player. File names will be all screwed up but the ID3 tags will be correct.

I've done this many times and it works great.

I remember when IPods reveloutuonized the music industry. Now the are considered antiques.
