    scam emails

My 87 year old Mom is getting lots of scam emails.
She tells me that she looks at them, but when she goes back to them a second time that they are gone.

Question: can an email self-delete from a private mail account once it has been opened?
    She uses RoadRunner.

The likely explanation is roadrunner deleting them from their email servers once they are identified as malicious.

How would the spam make it through in the first place? Spam is identified before it goes through the servers. If she's reading the spam emails in the spam folder, the spam folder is probably set to delete spam after a few hours.
