    Recommend Mono laser/fax printer?

    Thoughts?

I see Brother has a model MFCL2700DW and Canon has a model imageCLASS MF247dw. Basically for light home use and faxing ability. Tired to buying ink for inkjet printers and I rarely need color.

    TIA

Both companies make good printers. As long as they work well, and replacement toner carts. are not too expensive, you should be fine.

Laser is the way to go. I get toner carts on Ebay cheap. Still using a free from OfficeDepot Samsung that is 7+ years old.

Canon laser b&w all in one is what I have. Generic toner is only $10 on Amazon. You can usually find them on sale for about $80. Best small office investment I ever made.

Brother is a workhorse. I would suggest an email fax. Comes to your email, you can view it then print if needed. You get a real phone # for people to fax to.

I have a brother 2340 and 62?? The 62 is super fast with PPM and can duplex to save on paper.

My Samsung was FREE after rebates at OfficeDepot 7+ years ago and works great.

I've used Brother multifunction lasers for 10 years without a problem and highly recommend them for home use. Cartridges on average last between 1500 and 2400 pages and aftermarket cartridges can be had for $20. They do need the drum unit replaced every 12,000 pages or so but I don't print enough to worry about it.

Another option is an Epson Ecotank or HP "Instant Ink" inkjet printer. The Epson comes with a large tank and an estimated 2 years worth of ink while the HP comes with a large tank and a subscription for enough ink for X-number of pages per month. A year in I have yet to run a tank dry.

Is there any way to simply connect a printer, configure it as a default, and use it without finding drivers online, running the included software, etc? My parents have a cheap Lenovo desktop and an HP printer that I just can't seem to get going. They're also using Windows 10, which I'm unfamiliar with.

Between Cannon and Brother, the one Canon all in one laser printer we had eventually had mechanical parts in it wear out after 4 or 5 years. Gears and such, like on the document feeder. The tech that came to repair it said that it was typical for canon parts like that to eventually wear out. I asked him at the time which brand had the least problems and he said Brother.

Keeping that in mind, when the Canon finally gave up the ghost, I got a brother MFC all in one laser printer. The thing is going on 10 and a half years and works like the day I got it. I just drop new toner into it and change the drum when indicated. It's never jammed. Never had issues with the document scanner feeder. Just works and works.

Needless to say, I will be getting another Brother after this one, should the occasion occur.

It depends on the printer. Older printers may or may not be able to use the standard drivers supplied by Win 10. Also, certain older HP printers are not Win 10 compatible. There can be work arounds, but they are not simple. Some of the older printers do not have driver support to work with win 10.

I had an HP lasterjet printer that was still running like a top that I had to ditch for a new one once I switch to win 10 because there was no reliable way to get it to work with win 10.

If you do a google search of your printer model and win 10 you will generally see people talking about how to get it to work in forums and such if it is a model not supported by win 10

To be clear though, the best way to install any printer is to go to the manufacture website and use the most current driver package the manu. supplies. That will ensure best results for behaving correctly with Windows (any version).

Great info, thanks! I felt like I was doing the setup correctly so maybe it's an HP/Windows 10 compatibility issue.

email fax and an old laser printer.

I can still get cartridges but I have only used 2 in its time in my possession.

My good old HP 2100 Laserjet. I've had generic cartridges last 6K pages.

Its, what 20 years old now? Not a single service part needed except new cartridges. Use roller cleaners and run the cleaning service now and then and the fuser and rollers will likely never wear out. I run mine in generic HP drivers over a lan using an old jet direct card. Needs to be reset now and then but all the older jet direct cards had the crashing problem in that revision number.
