I would recommend an "outdoor" antenna either mounted to a chimney or roof eve mount. Aim the antenna toward sutro tower in SF. You will receive EXCELLENT reception.
I live in san jose toward bernal road and get awesome reception.

I created a mount from unistrut to mount the antenna pole to my chimney. Way more solid than the "chimney mounts" they sell on the internet. I will post a picture of it tomorrow when I get home.

Take a look at this one:

For a pole, you can use 1 1/2 metal electrical conduit.

      +1 for the outdoor antenna.

We ditched cable two years ago. Just have an antenna and Netflix.

Just some ideas about mounting antennas. The mounts are SUPER strong.
We also just have an antenna and netflix.
SONIC.NET for internet, which IS AT&T uverse.
          The antenna mast is 20ft

I have this one mounted on 2 five foot poes attached to the side of chimney like others above. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NQMCDK..._t1_B0024R4B5C

This is a replacement for an old CRT tv we had for years then went to Samsung Plasma.
As currently mounted I really do not see a difference in reception between the two antenna's. Though I do need to hoist this one up another five feet I think due to Walnut orchard in close proximity to antenna.

I also need to replace the 25 year old coax cable from antenna to TV, it may make a difference.
From Lemoore I pick up Bakersfield clear as a bell.

I don't think any particular antenna design makes a difference.

I've not spent any real time aiming it towards the towers like I ought to but we don't watch much TV. Mostly Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime. Also Google Chromecast.

Too many commercials on commercial TV and the news stations suck.

Most of the good shows you can get on Netflix and binge watch without commercials.

Depending on what you are going for, rabbit ears or one of those flat antennas should work fine.
But, if you want to spend the $$, the masts that people have posted work better.

FWIW, buy a Roku. If for no other reason than to get the new Roku channel. Free movies, unedited, but there are short commercials.

Plus you can access hundreds of other channels, including some local channels that have popped up.

Makes a nice platform for netflix also, as it is much faster than my Blueray player.

Between youtube, netflix, amazon, torrents, free streaming sites and OTA antenna... there is more than enough shows to watch several lifetimes.

                    I bought this one:

I mounted it about 4 feet off the ground in a suburb surrounded by two story houses and got excellent reception from close to 30 miles away. I'm sure it would have been even better mounted on the roof. Can't beat the price for what it is.

I bought this (friend of my wife's bought the same one just prior and recommended it).

This plus Fire stick + kodi (titanium build) = enough tv for us.

+1 for Roku. Lots of content and it works with Amazon Prime to give a lot of "free" movies (when you have Prime of course). I am currently working to eliminate cable, it's not really cable it's an ATT version called Uverse which does not use a Sat dish.

In any case, I cannot get reception with an antenna, so I'm stuck with some kind of wire.

Get a amazon fire stick for $40 then hack it to get kodi/exodus or put terraruim tv on it. You will have every tv show and movie ever but no live sports. Just google how to put kodi or terraruim tv on fire stick then watch a YouTube video and follow instructions.
