Interesting, thanks for the post. My work actually pre-installs CCleaner on our work laptops and we're asked to run it weekly. Never been a fan of it really, like you said, you can manually do everything the software does. -
true, but you have to boot from another OS - hard drive - live CD to have total access ...
& forget about being 'Administrator'...
it doesnt give you all the access to open & delete a bunch of Win system files.
Even CCleaner cant access & delete all of your key strokes & folders history...
Ever heard of , Shellbags...?
Its a complete history of every folder you have ever opened on your Win PC
Windows' shellbag entries are capable of showing you how and when specific files and folders were accessed. For maximum discretion, Ghacks shows you

Yes it does, the file security is enforced by the OS, boot to another OS and enjoy it's file security instead. As long as you understand what you're doing, and what your're trying to do, everything will be fine.
That said, none of this is necessary, you don't need to clean "temp files" and certainly don't "clean" or touch your registry.
This isn't the 90's, your computer has the power to process a 18MB registry and your 200+GB hdd wont suffer from a few gigs of wasted space, hell most of us are wasted space and we get along just fine.Comment

you can kill most of the stuff you need, whatever is locked by the OS/permissions, wont be programatically available via some 3rd party garbage/false sense of security software.true, but you have to boot from another OS - hard drive - live CD to have total access ...

of course shellbags are retained, because if you open a folder/file/window 9 months from now, the location/size is remembered, all of that is really irrelevant in terms of 'security' or privacy.
these bits of registry addition/retention are irrelevant compared to windows updates, which bloats the registry by thousands of lines. stock registry hives are like 10-18 megs, after a good while of software install/uninstall and windows updates, its not common to see them inflate to like 80+megs
keeping a tidy system is always #1, test software via a sandbox or test machine, then figure out what you do use/dont want to keep, for your next system wipe. software and behavior is always evolving, so wiping/reinstalling will eventually be a good idea
its like the idea of cleaning all hair, fingerprints and traces of you at home, every so often, because you'll suddenly operate/be faster/safer/more secure etc.. nonsense basically
in terms of security, the whole point is to not be compromised to begin with.
*add: oh and speaking about history, remember that microsoft adds telemetry/keylogging via windows updates in xp, vista, 7, 8.xLast edited by cid`; 09-19-2017, 11:13 AM.Comment
