    good ethernet switch suggestion ?

can anyone suggest a good ethernet switch ? i was trying to use a linksys SD205, 5 port ethernet switch. my concern is with just the feed line coming in, at 100 mb, and the the feed coming out, is 70 mb.......i am dropping 30 in speed, just in the connection before i plug anything else in. i have cat 7 line feeding the switch. is this normal to drop that much speed ? any suggestions on a better switch ? i only need to have two lines feeding of the input.
(i tried wireless with a ASUS AC 1300 dual band gig router, but my laptop is single band , and pretty much limits me to 70 mb. if i hardwire straight to the laptop, i get 117 mb.

Out of curiosity, do you have your input cable running through a UPS? Had mine running through the surge ports of an APC 1500va model and found that to be the cause of a significant drop in performance on my network.

    Just a thought.

my input cable is coming directly from my cable box using cat 7. when i plug into my laptop and run a speedtest.....it is 100+ mb. when i do nothing but go through the switch, i lose @ 30 mb.

I would try a better switch based on what you said in your two posts.

any old gigabit switch will do fine, all speeds are maximum/theoretical, so you'll never get it unless you have traffic shaping, expect about 60-75% speed, also wireless is not as fast as they advertise, unless you're right next to it.. higher freq bands provide more throughput closer, but die tremendously at distance

I've been using Trendnet's TEG-S82G 8 Port Gigabit Green Ethernet switches for years and have never had a problem. You'll get the best speeds using hard wired Ethernet.

Make sure your network card is set to auto if its forced you could end up doing half duplex.

Cached data on the second test?

Faster proc or drive controller on the second test?

Machine running Vista or Win10 on the 1st test, or still booting (post-login procs?) during test?
Machine running different AV and bloatware could also be factor.

Lots of factors it could be.

I'll second the nomination for TrendNet gigabit GREENnet switches. I have the 5-port and 8-port versions, and they don't slow me down at all.

Just for completeness, I have to ask if you have a router built into your cable modem or inline immediately after it. Wouldn't be safe without that. I use the NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Dual Band Gigabit Wifi Router which in addition to Wi-Fi has four wired ports that are connected to my TrendNet switches.

With a good ethernet switch, you should get about 90% throughput on the access ports. If you're only getting 75% there's something wrong. For gigabit ports, you should see a real world transfer speed of about 110-115 Megabytes/sec.

Great advice! That was a good router in its day but (no disrespect intended) I wouldn't suggest going dinosaur-router hunting today . Probably the router best deal is on a T-Mobile optimised Asus RT-AC68 AC1900 router for $80 at Amazon. It's basically the same as the $150 vanilla version (I've owned a RT-AC1900 for years) but the T-Mobile version includes a few tweaks for cellphone over wireless calling. I'm currently using an Asus RT-AC3200 but it's probably overkill for most people. I won't suggest any Netgear routers until they get their security act together.

BTW two of those RT-AC1900 routers, one in bridge-mode, is a good way to extend the network to areas that you can't reach with cables.

Those are good too, thanks. I'll keep those links for future reference. Netgear is still making that model though, and the 4500v3 firmware is not on that vulnerabilities list. I have more than one unit, they're mighty powerful, I know the admin so well I don't have to think about it, and I keep the firmware up-to-date.
