any of you folks use a sat phone? if so any recommendations. looking into getting global star since they are having a good deal. free phone gsp1700 and only 99$ for unlimited min. plan to keep it in my truck or boat. mostly will be using it in remote desert area or the oceans. I do travel to different countries. but for 99 bucks unlimited thats pretty cheap and your home calling area is pretty much world wide....

Not sure if this would fit your needs, but check out the Garmin InReach Explorer +. Does not do phone calls, but does allow two-way texting along with tracking, GPS and SOS functions.Guns, dogs and home alarms. Opponents are all of a sudden advocates once their personal space is violated.

I am in baja a lot as well as Death Valley. And sometimes sailing to Catalina. Also traveling over seas. 100 a month to call anywhere and be anywhere is well worth it. My cell phone bill alone when traveling aboard for a month is around 400 or so... just seeing if any other member here has one and has used the service.

I used GlobalStar about 5 years ago...they were the cheapest available. BUT they were upgrading all there satellites and the coverage was sporadic. I was out in Baja and on the Mojave road solo enough to justify it. But I didn't renew it for a second year as the ROI just wasn't there.
If I threw a boat into the mix? I'd probably still have it. There customer service (based in Great Britain as I recall) was pretty good. No complaints.
Sounds like a pretty darn great deal to me but only you know how much you'll use it. I'd also consider the 1200 min plan unless you know you'll use more. Back when I used them they were super cool about upgrading/downgrading anytime you wanted.Last edited by TurboChrisB; 09-05-2017, 8:49 AM.Comment

The appeal and luxury of a sat phone is nice, and if you use it frequently then it's worth the $100/month price tag.
For most people a marine radio and or a ham radio generally gets you that saftey blanket with no service costs attached to it.ExtremeXComment

I would go for an Iridium Sat Phone : 9555 or 9575
And buy a 500 minutes / 365 days card
How often will you use it finally . . .
Other option is Thuraya but no clue how good reception is out here
In Europe it works perfect
Advantage of Thuraya Sat / Cell phones is that you can use your sim card / sat card in one phone !
And they are the most 'compact' + the best quality in voice reception
It's give and take . . . .Last edited by Kingair001; 09-05-2017, 8:38 PM.WTB : Bren Ten - WTB : Wildey 45 & 475 MagnumComment
