[HOW TO]: Post images that never disappear on CG

There are other ways to do this of course, but this I've found is fastest. You do not need to register, or sign in, or anything to use imgur.

1. Upload your picture to www.imgur.com (pro-tip: you can paste any image, or drag files directly onto the imgur home page)


2. Click the little down arrow, then Get share links:

3. Click Copy from the BBCode (Forums) area:

4. Paste into your Calguns post. (Ctrl+V on Windows, Command+V on Mac)

What if your images appear HUGE?

This happens because imgur preserves the native resolution of your files.
Modern cameras take very high resolution pictures, but you can resize them easily:

1. After uploading your image, click Edit image
   
2. In the box to the top right you'll see the pixel dimensions (width x height) of your image.
   Select one of them and edit it to a lower value like 600. Click into the next box, but don't change anything and it will automatically update as long as lock proportions is checked.
   
3. Click Apply on the left side of your screen.
   
4. Click Save

OR, here's another secret way to do the same thing. Fast & easy:

When you copy imgur links into Calguns, you should see something like this:

Just add a lowercase L (l) to the filename before the dot-extension (.jpg in this case):

Here's what they look like compared to each other:

In this case the original image wasn't really too huge, but you get the point.
You don't have to use "l" there are other options too, but I'd recommend "l" or "h":

t = Small Thumbnail (160×160)
m = Medium Thumbnail (320×320)
l = Large Thumbnail (640×640) as seen in the example above
h = Huge Thumbnail (1024×1024)

This is a how-to post, stickied for Calgunners to find easily.

I wrote this guide because I'm tired of broken images and clicking attachments on CG.
I am not affiliated with Imgur, it's just a useful tool I've used for years without issue.



To clear things up for CGers who might be concerned:

I agree that it is necessary in some regards for social media for the 'sharing' function to work with regards to timelines or feeds, but places like Flickr, Zenfolio, and Smugmug do not require a transferable/sublicenseable license to be issued to the them. Thus, I prefer Flickr and Zenfolio for photos.

Zenfolio is a paid service, not really an equitable comparison.
Flickr certainly does require a transferable license. It is owned by Yahoo. Find their ToS here.
