Had to reload the drivers. Everything is working as it should ( for now ) The Fan was blown with some compressed air and its working for now. I also downloaded the new bios and misc updates from Lenovo.

Yup... need some antivirus now.. I hear malwarebytes it's pretty good

Avast free antivirus. Best, lightest, and most unintrusive AV you can get. Screw Norton/McAfee.

If you use Malwarebytes, use, then uninstall.
Same with IOBit stuff, use, then uninstall. The IOBit Uninstaller works VERY well, and is safe to leave on your 'Puter. The other IOBit stuff are good programs, but very "naggy".

Since you seem to like tinkering, They have the i7 2640 CPU@2.8Ghz on Ebay for around $45, if you can scrape the ducketts up for it (PERFECT for the T420!). Advertise some of your older computers in a local trading post. Use that money to upgrade yer laptop. That's what I do!

Get some good thermal gel, take the top off, speakers off, fan and heat sink off, upgrade the processor, RE-GEL both your CPU, and nVidia GPU, take that opportunity to give it a REAL good cleaning! I've got this routine down to 20-30 minutes, and that's while drinking ice tea. (ice tea won't drink itself, someone's gotta do it !)

Here's a three minute (or less) maintenance routine that will keep your laptop, or any computer, running fast, and trouble free for years.

Software needed:

Avast! AV.
CCleaner.
MalwareBytes.
IOBit Uninstaller.
IOBit Driver Blaster.
Windows native disk cleaner, and defrag.
Macrium Reflect.

Shortcuts needed:

One named TEMP1
(C:\Windows\Temp)

And another named TEMP2
(C:\Users\(YourAcct)\AppData\Local\Temp.

ALL of the above is FREE

Make a folder in C:\ named MAINT, or whatever floats your boat.

Drag shortcuts for all the above to it.

RC your taskbar, and choose NEW TOOLBAR.

Find your new folder, click it, and apply.

This places that folder neatly into the taskbar for easy access.

Weekly/Daily

Use IOBit uninstaller to check for toolbars, or any other crap you've inadvertently, downloaded and installed.
Be CAREFUL what you check during installation of this program! READ EVERYTHING carefully. IF you download any other IOBit program you don't want, use Uninstaller to remove it.
Remove anything you don't use. This is the BEST, most effective, and easiest "bloatware" removal tool I've found.

Click the two TEMP shortcuts (one at a time, of course),
THEN Ctrl+a, then Ctrl+d, then click DELETE.
Not ALL files will be removed, some will remain. That's ok.

EMPTY your Recycle bin.

Run CCleaner.

Empty Recycle bin again, if needed.

That's it. Takes less than two minutes, after you've done it the first time.

Monthly, and on your FIRST run:

IOBit Driver Blaster. This updates your most important drivers.
If Driver Blaster borks a driver (not DB's fault, usually a crappy driver update), just roll that driver back in Compmgmt.

Avast! AV.

MalwareBytes.

IOBit Uninstaller. Use it to remove IOBit Driver Blaster, AND MalwareBytes, and anything else you don't want/need.

Both Temp shortcuts.

EMPTY your Recycle bin.

CCleaner.

EMPTY your Recycle bin AGAIN.

Windows Disk Cleaner.

Defrag.

Image your drive with Macrium Reflect.

Avast, MalwareBytes, and Macrium here, are VERY important! They take a while, but you'll find the results worth it.

As I believe in redundancy, I suggest using Windows native disk imaging, to make a second backup. DON'T FORGET TO MAKE BOTH A MACRIUM, AND WINDOWS RESCUE DISK, OR USB MEDIA, AND A WINDOWS, PASSWORD RESET DISK!

A note on using the Uninstaller:
IOBit Uninstaller, will use the programs uninstall utility, if it has one. When that programs finished uninstalling, if it prompts you to REBOOT, don't do it. Choose REBOOT LATER. Let IOBit, do the reboot.

It's important to follow this list IN ORDER.

Because I do this, I have MANY computers, and have no trouble out of ANY of them. I have one, that has had the same WinXP installation since 2005. One Win7HP installation, since 2008. They both run as well as they did since day 1.

can someone recommend a sturdy windows laptop ? looks with something that would handle windows 7 with at least 4gb memory. Are the lenovos ok ? don't want to spend more than 50 bucks.... ok ok maybe 100
