    computer IP location

Can anyone tell me of a good site to where I can type in a computer IP and it will give me its proper location?

Can more than one computer have the same IP?

I've tried a couple sites, typed in my own IP and it gave results that went from here (san diego) to Alabama and Hawaii.

    Thx

There are plenty of Geo IP tools on the web. Maxmind is a commonly used GeoIP database used by other applications and developers if you want to run something locally.

Yes, multiple computers can use the same (publicly routed) IP. That's what most people are doing already via their home ISP (home router with a single public IP with several private / RFC1918 addresses for the internal network).

GeoIP can be subjective. IP addresses are typically contained in sets / ranges / cidr blocks and a regional, national, or even global organization that owns an IP range could use those addresses in different geo locations as needed. Accuracy of geoip could vary since the data could be based on the cdir owner to indicate where the IP is being used geographically while the data for a geolocation of an IP may actually be computed based on known geolocation of the routers nearest to the IP in question.

Arghh. It's important that I show that an IP wasn't mine or even from my area.
        Thanks for the info!

There are other ways you can prove it was not your machine. Ask your ISP for the info to your address.

Ask them for the MAC address of the PC they're looking for. MAC addresses are unique to PC's. I think MAC addresses are a little harder to spoof than an IP addresses.
It's tough being a tall guy in a world built for average people.

              IPCONFIg

if you want your machines IP address and MAC address, open a command prompt window using the CMD command. At the c:\ prompt enter the command ipconfig and press return.

Should give you what you are looking for. maybe.

                Not at all.

Every router or managed switch that I've ever been in allows manual MAC setting. Many of my traffic signal networking devices also allow for manual MAC setting, so I could theoretically make a traffic signal controller "look" like my Galaxy.

That's going to be pretty hard to show beyond a reasonable doubt, particularly considering how simple it is to spoof an IP.

                    How would they know that?

                    EDIT:

Here is the TCP/IP protocol, including a handy diagram of the TCP header. Note: No MAC address.

MAC addresses are not normally propagated off your local network.

OP: are you trying to find out something about an IP address or hide your IP address?

Ya... I can't even read them on the external VLANs on our traffic network.
Everything on the internal Class-B subnet shows, but anything coming in through the gateway from the fiber backbone only returns the IP.

You will only find out who the block belongs to unless you get a subpoena to the ISP and they look at IPDR to find out what IP the person was using at the time in question and who is provisioned for the public ip for it. I run into blocks that are not correct for their location but accurate for the ISP owner all the time.

Thanks everyone. I do know how to find my own IP address. I apologize and should have given more detail on what's going on.

I am suing a company for illegal telemarketing. They claimed that I signed up online for them to call. They showed my sign up info. In this site they also capture the IP number of whoever signed up. The IP they had wasn't mine of course. But it got confusing when their IP and mine showed up in different states. Fortunately, none of theirs showed to be in San Diego. I am using a desktop computer with Microsoft/Internet Explorer.
