    1060 vs 970 for 1440p?

A friend of mine has a 970 he would sell cheap, is the 1060 worth it? I would be playing games at 3440x1440, don't really care if I have to turn the detail levels down just wondering if the 1060 would be more future proof or efficient as it will be used in a micro case.

Took a while for me to figure out you're referring to nVida series of graphics cards. I do not like buying 2nd hand graphics card, the fan on these cards tend to wear out, especially if your friend is a gamer and the fan has been working at high speed for very long hours. If I were you, I'll get a new 1060 instead.

I'm using a Asus GTX 1070 and if you can, go for the upgrade. The performance is great and the fan is silent, important for me as my desktop is also used for working at home.

Yeah after seeing benchmarks I'm planning on the 1060 6gb.

edit: this will be going in an alienware x51 so I am kinda dependent on power and space, the compact 1060 is about it and even then I think I've got to modify the case slightly for it.

Also make sure you have a 6-pin power connector available, check if the 1060 takes 6-pin power connector, my 1070 does. Older graphics cards use 4-pin types and I had run out to Frys to buy a 4-to-6 pin adaptor when I got my 1070.
