    Problems with Win 7 Laptop

A few weeks back I spilled some liquid onto the left hand keyboard area of my five year old HP DV6 Series laptop. I shut it down, removed the battery, and wiped off what liquid was visible on the surface. I inverted the laptop and let it sit in front of gas fireplace insert overnight and was able to get it to boot up the next afternoon and it's been working with a few minor hiccups until now.

Last night, I went to use it and it did not boot and loaded the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen instead. Trouble is I can't do anything as the Arrow keys on my keyboard do not respond to allow actions to be selected and the Enter key does not work either.

I'm pretty much consigned to the fact that I've gotten my money's worth out of the unit and am going to Costco tomorrow morning to see about a replacement. I'd like to able to get the old unit to boot so I could grab some folders, music, photos, etc. off that I hadn't backed up, hopefully without having to pay a Tech to do it.

Any suggestions or am I screwed here?

      Problems with Win 7 Laptop

Purchase a SATA-to-USB cable (under $20 from Amazon). Remove HDD from failed laptop. Use cable to connect HDD to new laptop. Copy desired files to new laptop. Assumes HDD from failed laptop is not toast. Google is your friend. I used this type of cable to clone three laptop HDDs to new solid state drives, plus copy files around. Cable works with no problem.

ETA: the cable is a Startech USB 3.0 to SATA 2.5" HDD adapter $11.95. It is compatible with USB 2.0.

If you have a spare USB keyboard somewhere, you can try pluggging that in and see if it works.

If not, use the external sata drive enclosure mentioned above to get your files out.

I fixed one of ours that was spilled by replacing the keyboard. EBay had it and it wasn't too pricey. Pretty easy to do with YouTube and Google.

Ok - bought this SATA to USB cable and have the old HD removed and connected up to a new HP laptop running Windows 10 that I bought from Costco. Could use some help with the process from this point as I've never done this before plus I'm new to Win 10 on a PC.

Never mind - I think I figured it out. Had to click on Users to gain access.
