    dash cams.. video styles

looking to buy a dash cam,
but so many out there some very good (read pricey). some just horse do-do. and still pricey.

but my question is video format? at least 10 different kinds.
fps? most say 30 fps. some less, some more.
clear video? need to know what the LP number/letters are.

figure gps can be a plus, of course time and date, on screen. speed would be good.
what is worth it for a non tecky like me.
i need something where i can just plug the chip into my computer, phone (I phone.. for now) (blue-tooth? wi-fi?)

The Wire Cutter has a good if somewhat old (3/25/2016) review of Dash Cams. I didn't buy one of the recommended cams I bought a Rexing V1 with a 2.4" LCD and FHD 1080p 170 degree wide angle lens. I like it but it does require a good 10' or less power cable. I like it because of the small form factor.

I just bought a similar unit to the Rexing. Mine is called the Viofo. Based on m research on dash cam forums (yes, there are such forums!), Viofo is a great company and there are many knock-offs, etc. I bought mine from banggood.com. The 118C is the unit I got for around $40.

The 119 model supposedly has better quality at night. I kind of regret not paying a little more for the 119.

Make sure you get a capacitor based unit because they are longer lasting and more reliable than a battery-based unit.

I tried a number of them and they are all hard to see the license plates due to the glare from your headlights. I ended up buying a goluk t3 for $99. It is compact, easy to mount, will take 128gb micro SD cards and forms a wireless connection to your iPhone which doubles as a screen and allows you to view and download clips. I'm pretty happy overall though I would eventually like to hardwire it so it will run continuously even when I'm parked.

Regarding the glare...I found a small circular polarizer filter for my dash cam that eliminates all of the windshield and headlight glare. It was like $30 on Amazon and I found a custom 3D printed plastic mount for it, made for my exact camera...another $15, but that filter totally made my video clear and usable.

            thanks.
i had a dash cam years back. but...
kinda grainy (no not the budget one) or is that pixels? and had a only this maker special program to view the videos. it was not easy to work with. even there tech support had problems.
but could speak and understand American english very good.

been looking at the new improved special one from thinkware, there F770. due to night vision.
i work and drive at night.

costly. but has a couple fixtures i can make use of.

              dash cams.. video styles

I haven't had any problems with graininess like you see on some of those Russian dash cam videos. Most of them are made in China and don't have great support if you need that.

I had a falcon as well and while it was cool (dedicated screen and smart phone form factor, and came with two docking stations so you could move it from car to car), I found that having a dedicated one was better. The T3 I'm referencing was $99 and I think that price point is the best bang for your buck in terms of what you get.

You will have to download the app for whichever brand you choose but I found this relatively pain free at least as far as iPhones go. YMMV on android.

Abu - i'm going to have to look into that polarizer filter. Didn't think of that. My lasik from 10yrd ago is wearing off so I need all the help I can get.

If you happen to see this and have a link please share! Thank you

I used them when I was shopping for a dash camera. Im currently using the Blackvue 650 2ch along with a backup battery. I like it because of its size. Its not too bad but its mic has trouble with my loud exhaust. It works OK at night but if you do not clean your windows, its somewhat useless.

I had a falcon zero intill it got stolen . Now i have a viper car alarm . The issue is no one is going to put it up and take it down every day and some POS is going to break in to your car and rip it off .

I have the same Blackvue...it has killed maybe 3-4 microSD cards. Now it's sitting in the glove compartment because 1) the last firmware update is causing an error and 2) the 3M adhesive on the mount decided to stop being sticky...both should be solved once my procrastination is overcome

I love the Blackvue when it is working, but memory card issues and firmware issues have been a problem, in varying degrees, ever since I got it.

Yea, its picky on memory cards. I believe it has something to do with the heat. Some of them cant handle it. The first memory card I used died after 6 months. The memory card would get super hot and the videos would go corrupt. I now use a Lexar 64gb card and it only gets warm after a 2hr drive. I had if for just over a year and no issues so far. Checkout dashcamtalk. There is a guy there that bought and tested different memory cards and posted the results. I bought my current memory card because of his post.

Whats the issue are you having with the firmware? Are you using the Could or legacy firmware? I have to older version so I can not use the cloud firmware.

I tried the cloud FW and then tried to rollback and still got an error. I have my original FW backed up on a disconnected PC, so I just need to hook it up to access it. My plan is to just use the original Blackvue card with the original FW and be happy with it...assuming it works

I had a falcon and this is one of the reasons I got rid of it. It was heavy so it didn't stay mounted and it looks expensive as it basically looked like a smartphone. One reason I got the goluk is it's small lightweight and discreet. There is no LCD either because you view on your smart phone. I have it mounted just behind the rear view mirror and the wires are tucked into the headliner so you can't really see it unless you look for it.
