I have not bolt a new rig in 4 or 5 years or so. I've always liked amd stuff my last build is an 8120 8 core. runs hot but very stable and can multi task like an animal. that said there's a lot of buzz around the ryzen launch. was curious about others thoughts.

i been waiting for months. i waited so long i finally broke down and bought a dell server for my needs. i got a very good deal. i am going to wait until the benchmakrs come out plus wait until some of the other chips come out. -
If love to see AMD get back on its feet again in the CPU market. Ryzen looks good on the benchmarks I've seen so far. $599 vs a comparable $1700 Intel CPU will hopefully get some competition going.Comment

I'm very curious about the Ryzen series for my next gaming build 18-24 months down the road. I'm just concerned about what the performance/watt will be.

Ditto.
I don't game anymore so I'm fine with OTC HP boxes now, but I'm actually right now using my first Intel chip in many years.
I started out with a Tandy 1000, which was an 8088 at 7Mhz, built a 286-12, 386-25, then a 486-66.
I stuck with that 486 until my buddy got me into gaming and I upgraded to an Athlon 750... then "downgraded" to an Athlon 700 that I was able to overclock to 1Ghz
Built I think 2 different Athlon/Thunderbird cores after that in the 2Ghz range.
Stayed pretty much on top of the game with CPUs and video cards until 2002 or so when I got out of gaming for a number of reasons.
That last Thunderbird that I built in 2001 was my everyday machine (just upgraded the hard drives every 4 years) until the power supply finally died a couple of years ago.
Bought an HP i5 from Best Buy.
This was my old LAN party case...

It looks interesting, but I wouldn't hold my breath until we see some real world performance benchmarks other than gaming. AMD processors have always had higher marks than Intel in some AMD-optimized games, but the reason I've always chosen Intel over AMD is because Intel chips are way out in front in just about every other aspect. I do a lot of video encoding, and when you're encoding blu ray quality media, multithreading performance really matters, and Intel has always been way out in front of AMD. Plus, very few games can make use of 4 cores, much less 8.
It would be good for AMD to give Intel some serious competition for a change, and I hope they do. Time and more testing will tell the real story.

I hope AMD gives Intel a reason to start innovating again. They don't have to be as fast as Intel on the top tier to seriously cut into Intel's cake. They're chomping the heels of nvidia again in the low to mid grade gaming market finally (if you don't care about how much heat you generate.)Comment

This.
Competition is good for everyone.
AMD doesn't have to blast Intel's high end to force them to be price-competitive... they simply need to pull a chunk of their lower end and mid-lines, and issue press releases about their intentions to target the high end.- Rich

Do I want AMD to produce a competitive CPU offering? Yes.
Pre-ordering a $300-$500 CPU then having to drop another $180-$250 on a board, and possibly more on RAM if you don't already have some DDR4 to use, without proper independent benchmarking? HELL NO. The NDA ends on 3/2, anyone that's been holding out for years on an upgrade can survive waiting an extra week to make sure they didn't just piss away a few hundred dollars on garbage. I don't care if it's AMD, Intel, Nvidia, Matrox, Cyrix, etc. never trust marketing benchmarks.Comment

I'm waiting for the independent benchmarks to come out but I must say so far everything looks good. I'm in agreement with most of you having competition is good because Intel has been screwing around since there was no reason to really innovate.Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.
