Need help with Win XP with IE not connecting to "HTTPS"

I still have Win XP on my computer. Yes, I know it is old. So am I.

Anyways, when using Internet Explorer for searching the web, I can not connect to any site that has a URL with "https" secure http. Does anyone know what needs to be done to fix the Win XP or IE problem? The IE is version 8, if that helps. Is there a fix short of buying a new computer?
    Thanks.

Probably due to the use of SHA-2 certificates in HTTPS, try Google Chrome instead.

Check if the computer time/date is current.

^^Yup. Had to replace the coin battery in mine to fix time slipping. Use Firefox.

Chrome no longer supports XP. Firefox will continue until late 2017.

Someone mentioned SHA2/256, which is true, but there are other SSL parameters that sites implement which are not supported by older OSes+Browser combinations.

OP, your system is likely telling you more information about why the connection cannot be made. It would help if you shared that information rather than expect us to guess what the problem is.

My guess is the problem is expired root certificates. Easiest thing to do might be to install Firefox, which has its own certificate store. Running Chrome won't help if this is the problem, because it uses Windows certificate store like IE.
