Microsoft getting out of generational console gaming.

looks like project Scorpio might be the end of the "xbox" gaming console. the way they are talking sounds like Microsoft is getting out of the generational consoles and they are trying to make the gaming console like a gaming PC or something creating a "family of devices" with backwards and forwards compatibility. from what i can understand they want to create something like a steam library for xbox. what i don't understand is upgrades. will the upgrades be a new console every year or can you open it up and tinker like with a PC.

Earlier today I sat down with Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's head of Xbox games marketing, to talk about Xbox One, Project Scorpio and the future of console gaming. Here are Greenberg's thoughts on three key topics.

interesting. w know most consoles are a loser money wise for the manufacturer. but they do get the member fee every year for Xbox live and console games are cost more than pc games and stay inflated longer as well. they've already been working on Xbox to pc cross over compatibility in co op modes too. ps4 and Xbox one are just crappy computers after all with different operating systems. the htpc/gaming console is the future especially with the supposed upcoming ability to stream your games to other devices via your WiFi. it'll be an interesting next decade for sure.

they just cancelled one of their biggest games that was supposed to be out later this year. scalebound was a blockbuster for them from what was shown over the last 2 years.

the engadget article was also from nearly 5 months ago so I would take it with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't take it with a grain of salt. All you need to do is look at the disjointed x1 launch. The focus on entertainment and the X1 being the center of the entertainment cabinet and not games and you can see that MS has been trying to pivot away from just gaming on a console as their main focus for awhile.

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set themselves up as the more "hardcore" gaming version of the Apple app store. Same games across multiple devices. I bet the next xbox is more like a steam box or apple TV device rather than any of the past xboxes.

I would not be surprised at all.
