    Android phone

My Samsung slider from 2008 finally died so I ended up getting a new Samsung smartphone running android. The price was right and I couldn't see a reason to splurge for an iPhone

I like it! Any suggestions on what software I should install on it? Do they get viruses? Should I worry?

I've been using macs since the late 90s

I like Lookout for protection. It usually comes pre-installed. If not, you can install it from the Google play store. It is free and scans apps. It will also assist with phone location if lost or stolen.

I keep the location services turned off, otherwise, you'll get messages from Google asking you to review places you're at and just generally being creepy/stalker.

Overall, Android is a great platform that's fun to use and infinitely more customizable than iPhone.

A different launcher will allow you to go landscape in all applications, including the homescreen. Launcher Pro was my favorite, but does not work with all Android builds these days, not even with Cyanogen. ADW is my second favorite launcher if Launcher Pro Force Closes on your MFR's build when you go landscape...

I always use my devices landscape (except for the Scottrade app that doesn't take advantage of Android's landscape mode, as they expect everyone to be an iPhruity user), as I am a man, and don't have woman fingers for the dinky keyboard in portrait.

I usually use an AOSP (cyanogenmod), or the Google Keyboard too.

Cerberus for tracking up to 4-5 devices, for a low one-time fee... if you lose the phone, or it get's stolen, or your kids need to be GPS'd.

I run my Windows computers, and Adnroid phones really lean, and don't play games on them, so I get minimal pop-ups such as weather and crap one doesn't need every few minutes.

Watch out for flashlight apps. There are some in the Play Store that are loaded with malware and bloatware.

Don't need a flashlight app. Samsung's version of Android has quick flashlight access on the pull down control menu.
